About Kirby's Life and Music
Kirby was born in Memphis, Tennessee. She grew up in Southaven, Mississippi. She loved music from a young age. She studied music at the Stax Music Academy. After high school, she went to Berklee College of Music. However, she left in 2012 to focus on her music career. She was inspired by Kanye West's album The College Dropout.
How Kirby Got Started
Kirby started a special challenge on YouTube. She posted a new original song every day for 275 days. On day 302, someone from Roc Nation contacted her. This led to her signing with the record label.
Kirby's Songwriting Success
Kirby has worked with many well-known artists. These include Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez, Brandy, and Timbaland. She helped write the hit song "FourFiveSeconds". She also wrote "Die with You" for Beyoncé. Another song she wrote is "Break Your Heart Right Back" for Ariana Grande.
Her Own Albums
Kirby released her first album, Sis, in February 2020. A music reviewer from Okayplayer called it "a mashup of refreshing deep cuts." Two songs from this album were even used in the fourth season of the TV show Insecure.
In June 2020, Kirby made a video on TikTok that went viral. It talked about the history of the pancake brand Aunt Jemima. This video, along with other online discussions, helped lead to the brand changing its image.
