Late Medieval Artists
Italian Byzantine Style
Before the Renaissance began, these artists in Italy painted in a style similar to Greek icons. Their artworks were very important for teaching many Renaissance painters. These paintings were often seen in churches where later Renaissance artists worked and worshipped.
Sometimes, a large altarpiece by one of these artists would be surrounded by frescoes (wall paintings) made by Renaissance painters who lived 150 to 200 years later. For example, a famous Madonna and Child painting by Coppo di Marcovaldo was placed above the altar where Masaccio, Masolino, and Filippo Lippi painted the walls of the Brancacci Chapel. Giotto, who many consider the first Renaissance painter, learned from Cimabue, one of the greatest artists of this Late Byzantine style.
