Leroy Aziz Sané is a German professional footballer. He was born on January 11, 1996. He plays as a winger for Süper Lig club Galatasaray. He also plays for the Germany national team.

Sané started his professional career with Schalke 04 in 2014. In 2016, he moved to Premier League club Manchester City. He was named PFA Young Player of the Year in 2017–18. He was the first German player to win this award. He helped Manchester City win the league and the EFL Cup. In 2020, he joined Bayern Munich. He signed a five-year deal with them.

Sané played his first senior international game for Germany in November 2015. He was part of the German team that reached the semi-finals of UEFA Euro 2016.

About Leroy Sané

Sané was born on January 11, 1996, in Essen, Germany. He grew up near a stadium in Wattenscheid. His mother, Regina Weber, was a German rhythmic gymnast. She won a bronze medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics. His father, Souleymane Sané, was a footballer from Senegal. Leroy was named after Claude Le Roy, who was his father's coach.

Leroy's father met his mother while playing for SG Wattenscheid 09. Souleymane Sané grew up in France. He moved to Germany because of his service in the French Army. Leroy has two brothers, Kim and Sidi. They have also played for youth teams of big German football clubs.

Starting Out in Football

Sané began playing football in 2001. He joined the youth team of SG Wattenscheid 09. In 2005, he moved to Schalke 04. Three years later, he joined Bayer Leverkusen. He then returned to Schalke's youth academy in 2011.

On March 21, 2014, Sané signed his first professional contract with Schalke. He made his Bundesliga debut on April 20, 2014. This was in a game against VfB Stuttgart. He scored his first goal of the season on December 13. This was in a game against 1. FC Köln.

On March 11, 2015, Sané scored in his first UEFA Champions League match. This was a 4–3 win against Real Madrid. However, his team was knocked out of the competition.

Time at Manchester City

First Season: 2016–17

On August 2, 2016, Sané joined Premier League club Manchester City. He signed a five-year contract. The transfer fee was about £37 million. He played his first game for City on September 10. This was in the Manchester derby against Manchester United.

His first goal for City came on December 18. It was in a 2–1 home win against Arsenal. Sané scored again on January 21, 2017, against Tottenham Hotspur. He also scored in FA Cup matches against Crystal Palace and Huddersfield Town.

On February 21, Sané scored in a Champions League game against Monaco. City won 5–3. He scored again in the return game against Monaco. But City lost 1–3 and were knocked out.

In July 2017, Sané had surgery on his nose. He said it was hard for him to breathe during games. This surgery made him miss the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. He wanted to feel healthy for the next season.

Sané scored his first two goals of the 2017–18 season on September 9, 2017. This was in a 5–0 win against Liverpool. He scored twice more in a League Cup game against West Bromwich Albion. He also scored in league games against Crystal Palace, Stoke City, Burnley, and West Bromwich Albion. He won the Premier League Player of the Month award for October 2017.

On January 23, 2018, he scored in a 3–2 win over Bristol City. This helped City reach the League Cup final. City won the final 3–0 against Arsenal. Sané played a big part in this win.

Sané was named the PFA Young Player of the Year. This was for his role in Manchester City winning the 2017–18 Premier League title. He also had 15 assists, almost winning the Premier League Playmaker of the Season award.

On September 15, 2018, Sané scored his first goal of the 2018–19 season. This was in a 3–0 win against Fulham. He also scored two goals against West Ham United on November 24.

On January 3, 2019, he scored the winning goal against Liverpool. This was Liverpool's only league defeat that season. On February 21, 2019, Sané scored a great free kick against his old club, Schalke. He chose not to celebrate out of respect. City won that Champions League game 3–2.

On March 13, 2019, Sané had an amazing game against Schalke. He made three assists and scored a goal. City won 7–0. On April 24, 2019, Sané scored in a Manchester derby against Manchester United. This was his first goal in a Manchester derby.

Injury in 2019–20

Sané was often linked with a move to Bayern Munich. However, in August 2019, he got a serious injury. He tore his ACL (a knee ligament) during a game. This meant he would miss most of the season. The talks with Bayern were put on hold. In June 2020, Sané decided not to sign a new contract with Manchester City. His coach, Pep Guardiola, said Sané would leave the club.

Moving to Bayern Munich

On July 3, 2020, Bayern Munich signed Sané. He agreed to a five-year deal. He scored in his second Bundesliga game for Bayern. This was an 8–0 win against his former club, Schalke 04. On November 3, 2020, Sané scored his first Champions League goal for Bayern. This was in a 6–2 win against Red Bull Salzburg.

In the 2021–22 Champions League season, he scored six goals and made six assists. This included three goals against Benfica. On September 7, 2022, he scored a goal against Inter Milan. He was named Player of the Match. On October 4, he scored two goals against Viktoria Plzeň. This was his 20th goal in the Champions League.

On September 20, 2023, Sané scored the first goal in a 4–3 win over Manchester United. He was named Man of the Match. This was Bayern's first goal in the Champions League for the second year in a row against the same goalkeeper. He was also named Bayern's Player of the Month for August.

Joining Galatasaray

On June 11, 2025, Galatasaray announced they had reached an agreement with Sané. He arrived in Istanbul to sign his official contract.

On June 12, 2025, Sané officially signed with Süper Lig club Galatasaray. He joined on a free transfer with a three-year deal. He will wear the number 10 jersey.

Sané was first called up to the Germany under-21 team on August 28, 2015. He played his first game for the U21 team on September 3, 2015. This was a 2–1 win against Denmark.

Senior National Team

Sané was called up to the German senior team on November 6, 2015. This was for a friendly game against France. He could also play for France because he has French citizenship. On November 13, 2015, he played his first game for Germany. This was against France.

Germany's coach, Joachim Löw, chose Sané for UEFA Euro 2016. He played in one match during the tournament. Germany lost to France in the semi-finals.

Sané was not chosen for Germany's team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Another young player, Julian Brandt, was picked instead. In September 2018, Sané left the team hotel before some games. He said it was for "personal reasons." It was later shared that he left because his daughter was born.

On November 16, 2018, he scored his first goal for Germany. This was against Russia. Germany won the game 3–0.

On May 19, 2021, he was chosen for the squad for UEFA Euro 2020. He played in all four of Germany's matches.
