Anglo-Catholic churches are a special part of the Church of England. They combine the traditions and practices of the Anglican Church with many beliefs and ways of worship that are similar to the Catholic Church. Think of it like a bridge between the two!

What is Anglo-Catholicism?

Anglo-Catholicism is a movement within the Church of England that emphasizes its Catholic heritage. This means they often use more traditional church services, wear special robes, and have a strong focus on the sacraments, like Holy Communion. They believe that the Church of England is a part of the wider Catholic Church, even though it's separate from the Roman Catholic Church.

Why do some churches need 'Alternative Episcopal Oversight'?

In 2014, the Church of England made a big decision: it said that all jobs in the church, including bishops and priests, are open to everyone, no matter their gender. This means women can now be bishops and priests.

However, some Anglo-Catholic churches have a strong belief that only men should be priests and bishops. The Church of England understood this and wanted to make sure these churches still felt welcome. So, they created something called Alternative Episcopal Oversight (AEO).

AEO means that if a church doesn't agree with women bishops or priests, they can ask for a different bishop to guide them. This special bishop shares their traditional views. It's a way for everyone to feel included and respected within the Church of England, even with different beliefs on this topic.

Who provides this special oversight?

In the southern part of England (called the Province of Canterbury), the bishops who provide this special guidance for Anglo-Catholic churches are:

  • The Bishop of Richborough (currently Norman Banks)
  • The Bishop of Oswestry (currently Paul Thomas)
  • The Bishop of Fulham (currently Jonathan Baker)

In the Diocese of Chichester, the main bishop of that area also provides this special oversight.

In the northern part of England (called the Province of York), the main bishop for Anglo-Catholic churches is the Bishop of Beverley (currently Stephen Race). In some areas, like the Diocese of Leeds and the Diocese of Blackburn, other specific bishops provide this guidance.
