Avatar: The Last Airbender is a popular American animated TV show. It was created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko for Nickelodeon. The show first aired on February 21, 2005, with two episodes. It finished its three-season run on July 19, 2008. The final episode was a special two-hour television film called "Sozin's Comet".
In the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender, some people can control, or "bend," one of the four elements: Air, Water, Earth, and Fire. There are also special types of bending, like metal, ice, and lightning. Each element has its own nation. Not everyone can bend, and those who can usually only bend one element.
However, the Avatar is a special person who can bend all four elements. The Avatar can also talk to spirits. When an Avatar dies, they are reborn into a new nation, following a cycle: Fire, Air, Water, and Earth.
The story begins 100 years after the Fire Nation started a big war against the other nations. They tried to find the Avatar, who was reborn as an Airbender named Aang. The Fire Nation even wiped out all the Airbenders. Aang was trapped in ice for 100 years, so he didn't know about the war. The series starts when a Waterbender named Katara accidentally frees Aang.
The show then follows Aang and his friends: Katara, Sokka, and later Toph. Aang's main goal is to master all four elements. He also needs to defeat the Fire Nation and bring peace back to the world. The story also focuses a lot on Zuko, the banished prince of the Fire Nation. Zuko was hurt by his own father, the Fire Lord. He is determined to capture Aang to get his father's approval and get his honor back.

Season One (also known as Book 1: Water) of the TV show Avatar: The Last Airbender had 20 episodes. These episodes first aired from February 21, 2005, to December 2, 2005. The show was created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. Famous actors like Zach Tyler Eisen, Mae Whitman, Jack DeSena, Mako, Dante Basco, and Jason Isaacs lent their voices to the main characters.
This season follows the main hero, Aang, and his friends Katara and Sokka. They travel to the North Pole to find a Waterbending master. A Waterbending master can teach Aang and Katara how to control water. Meanwhile, Fire Lord Ozai from the Fire Nation is fighting a long war. He is battling the Earth Kingdom, the Water Tribes, and the Air Nomads (whose people were already destroyed). Aang is the current Avatar. He must learn to control all four elements: Air, Water, Earth, and Fire. This will help him defeat the Fire Lord and end the war. On their journey, Aang and his friends are chased by many people. These include Prince Zuko, a prince who was sent away from the Fire Nation, and Admiral Zhao, a leader in the Fire Navy.
Each episode of Season One was very popular. More than a million people watched each episode when it first aired. The season also won awards. It won "Best TV Series" and "Best Animated Television Series" at the 2005 Pulcinella Awards. These awards celebrate great animation.
Making the Show
The TV show was made by and shown on Nickelodeon. Nickelodeon is owned by a company called Viacom. The show's creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, worked with Aaron Ehasz. Many talented people helped make the show. Eight episodes were directed by Dave Filoni. Animation directors Lauren MacMullan and Giancarlo Volpe each directed five episodes. Anthony Lioi directed two episodes.

DVDs and Movies
Watching at Home
The first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender was released on DVDs. In the USA, the DVDs started coming out on January 31, 2006. Each DVD usually had four episodes. Later, a "Complete Book One Collection Box Set" was released. This set had all 20 episodes of the season.
DVDs are made for different parts of the world. The USA DVDs were made for "Region 1." This means they usually only play in DVD players in North America. So, Nickelodeon also released DVDs for "Region 2" (Europe) starting in 2007. These DVDs could play in Europe.
The Live-Action Movie
The first season of the animated series was also made into a live-action movie. This movie is called The Last Airbender. It was directed by M. Night Shyamalan and came out in theaters on July 1, 2010.
Book Two: Earth (2006)
In this book, Aang focuses on learning Earthbending. New characters join the team.

Season Two of Avatar: The Last Airbender, also known as Book 2: Earth, is an animated TV series from the United States. It was shown on Nickelodeon. This season had 20 episodes, which first aired from March 17, 2006, to December 1, 2006.
The show was created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. Famous voice actors like Zach Tyler Eisen, Mae Whitman, Jack DeSena, Jessie Flower, Mako, Grey DeLisle, and Dante Basco brought the characters to life.
At the start of the season, the main character, Aang, and his friends, Katara and Sokka, were looking for an Earthbending teacher. They found and teamed up with Toph. Sokka also discovered important secrets about the war with the Fire Nation. Aang became very focused on finding his kidnapped flying bison, Appa. His search led him to Ba Sing Se, the capital city of the Earth Kingdom. There, he found out about serious problems and corruption within the city's government. By the end of the season, the Fire Nation took over Ba Sing Se. Aang and his friends escaped with Appa, who was finally found.
This season was highly praised by critics. Many said it was much better than other children's shows. They loved its look and how well it was made. Season 2 won several awards. These included "Best Character Animation in a Television Production" at the 34th Annie Awards. It also won "Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation" at the 2007 Emmy Awards.
Nickelodeon released the season on DVD in different sets. Between January 23, 2007, and September 11, 2007, five DVD sets came out. Four sets had five episodes each. A fifth set included all twenty episodes. These DVDs were for Region 1 (USA). In the UK, only the full season box set was released on July 20, 2009.

What Critics Thought
Critics really liked Season Two of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Gabriel Powers from DVDActive.com called it one of the best children's series recently. He compared it to shows like Samurai Jack and Justice League. He praised its deep stories and humor. Powers said the show could entertain both kids and adults. He felt it had a classic feel, using real Asian culture and stories.
Jamie S. Rich from DVD Talk also gave high praise. He said that while the idea of Avatar might seem simple, the way it was made was far better than other kids' entertainment. He also thought the show's overall look was consistently excellent.
The show was also recognized for its amazing visuals. At the 34th Annie Awards, the show won "Best Character Animation in a Television Production" for Jae-Myung Yu's work in the episode "The Blind Bandit." It also won "Best Directing in an Animated Television Production" for the episode "The Drill." In 2007, the show was nominated for "Outstanding Animated Program" at the Emmy Awards for "City of Walls and Secrets." While it didn't win that award, it did win "Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation" for Sang-Jin Kim's animation in the "Lake Laogai" episode.
DVD Releases
The second season of Avatar: The Last Airbender was released on DVD in several parts. Between January 23, 2007, and September 11, 2007, Nickelodeon put out five different DVD sets. Four of these sets each contained five episodes. The fifth set was a collection of all 20 episodes from the season. All these DVDs were made for Region 1, which covers the USA.
In the UK, fans could only buy the full season box set. It was not released in separate volumes first. The UK box set came out on July 20, 2009.

Future Film Plans
There were plans for a movie based on Book Two. This film would have been a sequel to The Last Airbender, which was based on Book One. The main actors and director M. Night Shyamalan were expected to return. Production might have started in 2011, with the movie possibly coming out in 2012. It was planned to be the second part of a three-movie series.
Book Three: Fire (2007–08)
The final book shows Aang mastering Firebending and preparing for the final battle against the Fire Lord.

This third and last season focuses on Aang's big mission: to defeat the powerful and scary Fire Lord Ozai. They also need to find someone to teach Aang how to Firebend.
Halfway through the season, Aang brings together friends he met in earlier episodes. They try to invade the Fire Nation, but it doesn't go as planned. Then, Zuko, who used to be an enemy, decides to join Aang's team. He becomes Aang's Firebending teacher. The season ends with an epic four-part finale. In this finale, Aang finally defeats the Fire Lord and brings the long war to an end.
This final season has 21 episodes, which is one more than the first two seasons. The big finale was shown as a two-hour television movie, combining four episodes. Just like the earlier seasons, Season Three received many positive reviews from critics. People especially loved the finale, with great comments from places like DVD Talk and IGN.

DVDs Available
Between October 30, 2007, and September 16, 2008, Nickelodeon released the season on DVD. There were four separate DVD volumes and a complete box-set. Each of the first three volumes had one disc with five episodes. Volume four had one disc with six episodes. The full box set included all 21 episodes on five discs. The box set was also released in the UK on February 1, 2010.

What People Thought
Just like the first two seasons, Season Three of Avatar: The Last Airbender got mostly positive reviews from critics. Jamie S. Rich from DVD Talk said that the show had "amazing animation." He also mentioned that the character designs were "colorful and inventive." He thought the animation was "smooth and consistently executed."
Jamie S. Rich also wrote that this final season was "the best." He liked how important things were happening in the story and how the characters were changing. He praised the show's creators for always keeping the quality high. He said the writing was "smart" and the animation was "always impressive."
Henrik Batallones, a writer for BuddyTV, pointed out that many news sources gave the season finale great reviews. He noted that even big names like the New York Times gave Avatar "glowing reviews."
The season also received praise for how good its video and sound quality were. Nick Lyons from DVD Talk thought the video looked even better than in previous seasons. He also said the sound was "spot on," meaning it was perfect.
The season won some awesome awards too! At the 36th Annie Awards in 2008, it won "Best Animated Television Production for Children." This was for "Best Sound Editing in a Television Animation" for their work in the episode "Avatar Aang."
Future Movie Plans
A movie called The Last Airbender was made, and there were plans for a trilogy. The final part of this movie series was expected to be based on Book Three. The main actors from the first two movies and M. Night Shyamalan were planned to return as director, writer, and producer.

Region 1 releases
The first DVD set for Avatar: The Last Airbender came out on January 31, 2006. For the first season, there were five DVD sets, each with four episodes. For seasons two and three, there were four DVD sets, each with five episodes. The very last DVD set of season three had six episodes.
After each season's individual DVDs were released, a special box set came out. These box sets included all the episodes from that season. They also had extra bonus features that were not on the single discs.
A big DVD box set called Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Complete Series came out on October 6, 2015. It included all three books. A Blu-ray version of the complete series was released on June 5, 2018. This was to celebrate ten years since the show's finale.
Other region releases
DVDs for Avatar: The Last Airbender were also released in other parts of the world, like Europe (Region 2) and Australia (Region 4). These releases started a bit later than in North America. They made sure the DVDs worked in different countries. For example, a complete series DVD box set was released in the United Kingdom on August 6, 2012.
