List of Boundary Peaks of the Alaska–British Columbia/Yukon border facts for kids
This article is about the special mountains called Boundary Peaks that mark the border between Alaska (a state in the United States) and British Columbia (a province in Canada). Some of these peaks also mark the border with Yukon, another Canadian territory. These mountains were officially named as border points after the Alaska Boundary Settlement of 1903. This was an agreement that decided exactly where the border should be.
To make sure everyone knew where the border was, special brass or concrete survey markers were placed on top of the "accessible" peaks. These markers were put in places where a surveyor could see the marker before it and the marker after it. This way, if there was ever a question about where the border was, people could look between two markers to find the exact line.
Besides the numbered peaks, some other important mountains and passes are also on the border. For example, T Mountain is in the Stikine Icecap area (57°12′41″N 132°14′54″W / 57.21139°N 132.24833°W). There's also an unnumbered Boundary Peak near the Alsek River (59°50′33″N 138°41′29″W / 59.84250°N 138.69139°W) and Mount Vern Ritchie further north. Important mountain passes on the border include Grand Pacific, Chilkat, Chilkoot, and White Pass.
