Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Korean War was a conflict that happened between 1950 and 1953. It started when North Korea invaded South Korea. The United States and other countries supported South Korea. China and the Soviet Union supported North Korea. This war was part of the larger Cold War. The main fighting lasted from June 25, 1950, until an armistice (a ceasefire agreement) was signed on July 27, 1953.

During this war, 146 brave American military members received the Medal of Honor. This is the highest award for courage in the U.S. military. Many of these medals, 103 of them, were given posthumously. This means they were awarded after the person had died.

The Medal of Honor: America's Highest Award

The Medal of Honor is the highest military award in the United States. It was first created during the American Civil War. This medal is given to members of the U.S. armed forces. To receive it, a person must show extreme bravery. They must act above and beyond their normal duties. They must also risk their own life while fighting an enemy of the United States.
