Many states in the United States have chosen official dances to represent them. These special dances are like other state symbols, such as a state bird or flower. This idea has also spread to U.S. territories and Washington, D.C..

Starting in the 1970s, many states began to pick square dance as their official state dance. This happened because square dancers worked hard to make it a national symbol.
