The US Open men's singles championship is a big annual tennis tournament. It's part of the famous US Open event, which started way back in 1881. Players compete on outdoor hard courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows – Corona Park, New York City, USA.
The US Open happens over two weeks in late August and early September. Since 1987, it has been the last of the four major tennis tournaments, known as Grand Slams, each year. Before settling in New York City in 1978, the tournament was held in different places like Newport, Rhode Island, and Forest Hills.
When it first started in 1881, only members of the United States National Lawn Tennis Association (USNLTA) clubs could play. But by 1882, players from other countries were allowed to join. The USTA is the group that organizes this exciting event today.

History of the Tournament
The rules for the men's singles matches have changed a lot since the first tournament. From 1884 to 1911, there was a special "challenge round." This meant the winner of the main tournament (called the All-Comers singles) would then play against the champion from the previous year. If the old champion wasn't there, the All-Comers winner automatically became the new champion. This challenge round system stopped in 1912.
At first, most matches were played as "best-of-three sets," meaning a player needed to win two sets to win the match. But in 1886, all rounds changed to "best-of-five sets," where players needed to win three sets. Best-of-three sets were brought back for early rounds in some years, like from 1975 to 1978.
A big change in scoring happened in 1970 with the introduction of the tie-break system. This system helps to quickly decide a set if the score reaches 6-6 games, making matches less likely to go on for a very long time. The US Open was the first Grand Slam to use a tie-break in the final (fifth) set.
The type of court surface has also changed over the years.
- From 1881 to 1974, matches were played on grass.
- From 1975 to 1977, they switched to Har-Tru clay courts.
- Since 1978, the tournament has been played on DecoTurf hard courts.
Only one player, Jimmy Connors, has managed to win the US Open on all three different surfaces!
The champion of the US Open men's singles gets a special trophy with their name on it. In 2023, the winner received a huge prize of US$3,000,000! There's also extra bonus money for players who do well in other tournaments leading up to the US Open.
Some players have won the tournament many times. In the early days (the Amateur Era), Richard Sears, William Larned, and Bill Tilden each won seven titles. Richard Sears holds the record for the most consecutive wins, with seven in a row from 1881 to 1887.
In the modern era (called the Open Era), Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras, and Roger Federer have won the most championships, with five titles each. Roger Federer holds the record for the most consecutive wins in the Open Era, winning five times in a row from 2004 to 2008.
