Matteo Ferrari Cavaliere OMRI (born December 5, 1979) is a former Italian football player. He was a defender, usually playing as a centre-back. He could also play anywhere else along the back line.

Ferrari played for several top Italian clubs in Serie A. He also played for Everton in England's Premier League. Later, he joined the Montreal Impact in Major League Soccer in North America.

He represented Italy at the Summer Olympics in 2000 and 2004. In 2004, his team won a Bronze Medal. He also played 11 games for Italy's main national team between 2002 and 2004. He was part of the Italian team at Euro 2004.

About Matteo Ferrari

Matteo Ferrari was born in Algeria. His father was an Italian engineer, and his mother was from Guinea. His father worked in many different countries in Africa. Sadly, his father passed away in 1993 when Matteo was 14 years old.

Matteo grew up in Ferrara, Italy. He has a brother who also played football. Matteo has a son named Aron, who was born in 2008.

Playing for Clubs

Starting His Career

Ferrari began his football journey at SPAL in 1995. He could play as a left-back or a centre-back. When he was younger, his coach even played him as a forward. He scored 37 goals in one league season before moving back to defense.

Internazionale then brought him into their youth system. He was later loaned out to other clubs like Genoa CFC, Lecce, and AS Bari.

He played his first game in Italy's top league, Serie A, on August 29, 1999. This was for Bari against Fiorentina.

Time at Parma

Ferrari returned to Inter Milan in 2000. After playing 27 games, he moved to Parma in 2001. He played very well for Parma. Because of his strong performances, Parma bought him permanently in May 2002.

He played as a starter for Parma for three seasons. During this time, he appeared in 81 league matches and scored three goals. He helped Parma win the Coppa Italia in the 2001–02 season.

Playing for Roma

On July 31, 2004, Ferrari joined Roma. He signed a contract to play for them. He was brought in to replace another defender who had left the club.

Ferrari returned to Roma for the 2006–07 season. He became a key player in the defense. He helped Roma finish second in Serie A. They also won the Coppa Italia that season.

Loan to Everton

In August 2005, Roma loaned Ferrari to Everton in England. Everton was playing in the UEFA Champions League at the time.

It took him a few games to get used to the English league. However, he showed his skills for Everton. Unfortunately, he got injured and was out of action for a while. In May 2006, Everton's manager decided not to extend his loan.

Back to Genoa

After his contract with Roma ended in 2008, Ferrari signed with Genoa CFC for free. He made his debut for Genoa on August 31, 2008.

During his time at Genoa, Ferrari sometimes received yellow or red cards. He was a regular player in defense under his coach.

Moving to Beşiktaş

After one season with Genoa, Ferrari moved to the Turkish club Beşiktaş on July 8, 2009. He signed a four-year contract with them.

He made his debut for Beşiktaş on August 7, 2009. In the 2010–11 season, Ferrari played less often. He also suffered a serious injury that kept him out for two months. After some disagreements, Ferrari left the club.

Playing for Montreal Impact

After leaving Beşiktaş, Ferrari trained with a few clubs. Then, the Montreal Impact invited him to their training camp. This was in February 2012.

On March 1, 2012, the Impact announced that Ferrari had signed with them. He joined the club for their first season in Major League Soccer.

On May 11, 2013, Ferrari scored an own goal against Real Salt Lake. But he made up for it by scoring the winning goal in the last minute of the game. This was his only goal for the Impact. His contract with the Montreal Impact ended on October 31, 2014.

Playing for Italy

Youth Teams

Matteo Ferrari could have played for Algeria, but he chose to play for Italy. He played for Italy's youth teams, including the Under-15, Under-16, Under-17, Under-18, Under-20, and Under-21 teams. He won the 2000 UEFA European Under-21 Championship with the Italy Under-21 team.

Italy Olympic Team

Ferrari played in two Olympic Games for Italy's Under-23 team. These were in 2000 and 2004.

In 2000, he played in Italy's quarter-final game against Spain. In 2004, he was one of the older players allowed on the team. He played in all of Italy's matches. They lost in the semi-finals but won the Bronze Medal game against Iraq.

Senior National Team

Ferrari was first called up to Italy's main national team in 2002. He made his full debut in a friendly game against Turkey on November 20, 2002.

He played his first important international game for Italy in a Euro 2004 qualifying match. This was against Azerbaijan. His last game for Italy was a friendly against Tunisia on May 30, 2004. He was chosen for Euro 2004, but he did not play in the tournament.
