Playing for Clubs
Starting His Career
Matteo Ferrari began his football journey at SPAL in 1995. He could play as a left-back or a center-back. When he was younger, his coach even played him as a forward, and he scored many goals! Later, he moved back to defense.
He then joined the youth system of Internazionale. From there, he was loaned out to other teams like Genoa CFC, Lecce, and AS Bari. He made his first appearance in Italy's top league, Serie A, on August 29, 1999, playing for Bari.
In 2000, he returned to Inter Milan. He played 27 games for them before moving to Parma.
Time at Parma
Ferrari joined Parma in 2001. He played very well there, which led to him joining the club permanently in 2002. During his three seasons as a regular player for Parma, he played in 81 league matches and scored three goals. He helped Parma win the Coppa Italia (Italian Cup) in the 2001–02 season.
Playing for Roma
On July 31, 2004, Ferrari moved to Roma. He joined as a replacement for another defender, Walter Samuel. In his first season with Roma, he found it a bit difficult to play as well as he did at Parma.
He came back to Roma for the 2006–07 season. Roma had finished second in the league the year before. Ferrari became a key central defender for the team. He played 27 times in Serie A, helping Roma finish second again. He also helped them win the Coppa Italia that season.
Loan to Everton
In August 2005, Roma loaned Matteo Ferrari to Everton, a team in England's Premier League. It took him some time to get used to the English league. He showed good quality but then got injured, which kept him out of action for a while.
Everton's manager, David Moyes, decided not to extend Ferrari's loan. So, Matteo returned to Roma in May 2006.
Back to Genoa
After his contract with Roma ended in 2008, Ferrari decided to sign with Genoa CFC again. He joined them for free. He played his first game for Genoa on August 31, 2008. During his time at Genoa, he was a regular player in defense. He sometimes had issues with getting yellow or red cards.
Time in Turkey with Beşiktaş
After one season at Genoa, Matteo Ferrari moved to Turkey. He joined the club Beşiktaş on July 8, 2009. He signed a four-year contract with them. He made his debut for Beşiktaş in August 2009.
In the 2010–11 season, Ferrari didn't play as much for the first team. He also suffered a serious injury that kept him out for two months. Later, there were disagreements between Ferrari and the club. Ferrari felt the club had broken his contract. The club also said he was absent from training. Both sides took legal action against each other. A sports court later ruled that Beşiktaş had to pay Ferrari money for his wages and medical costs.
Playing in Canada with Montreal Impact
After leaving Beşiktaş, Ferrari trained with a few clubs. Then, in February 2012, the Montreal Impact invited him to their training camp. The Montreal Impact is a team in MLS in North America.
On March 1, 2012, Ferrari officially signed with the Montreal Impact for their first MLS season. On May 11, 2013, in a game against Real Salt Lake, Ferrari accidentally scored an own goal. But he made up for it by scoring the winning goal for his team in the last minute of the game! This was the only goal he scored for the Impact. His contract with the Montreal Impact ended on October 31, 2014.
