Making the Music for Muppets Most Wanted
In November 2012, it was announced that Bret McKenzie would write the songs for Muppets Most Wanted. He also wrote songs for the earlier movie, The Muppets, which were very popular. For Muppets Most Wanted, Bret McKenzie wrote all the new songs himself.
Bret McKenzie's Songwriting Style
Bret McKenzie got ideas for his songs from famous songwriters. These included the Sherman Brothers, Irving Berlin, Paul Williams, and Harry Nilsson. He started with small ideas from the movie's script. Then, he would create many songs. He even made demo versions of each song. A demo is a rough recording to show how the song might sound. He would sing the songs himself, doing impressions of different Muppets!
McKenzie explained his process. He would usually play the piano and sing. He would use his many Muppet voices. Then, he would play a rough version for the team. They would decide what worked best. The director, James Bobin, often had visual ideas. He would ask McKenzie to change the words to fit what was happening on screen. After that, they would record the songs with the real Muppets.
A music video was released on March 19, 2014. It showed Bret McKenzie singing "I'll Get You What You Want (Cockatoo in Malibu)". You could watch it on Funny or Die.

Christophe Beck was chosen to write the movie's musical score in August 2013. A film score is all the background music that helps tell the story. This music was recorded in late 2013. It was made at the Sony Scoring Stage in Culver City, California. An 82-person orchestra called the Hollywood Studio Symphony played the music.
Inspiration for the Score
Christophe Beck got his ideas from many different cultures and music styles. He said that because the characters travel all over the world in the movie, there were many chances to use different kinds of music. This made the score very interesting and varied.
A separate album with only Christophe Beck's score was released. It came out on April 15, 2014, from Walt Disney Records and Intrada Records. This album includes music from both Muppets Most Wanted and The Muppets movies.
All songs written and composed by Christophe Beck.
