Patti Ann LuPone (born April 21, 1949) is a famous American actress and singer. She is best known for her amazing performances in musical theater. Patti LuPone has won many awards, including three Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards, and two Grammy Awards. She is celebrated for playing strong and determined women on stage.
She first appeared on Broadway in 1973. Patti LuPone became a huge star for her roles as Eva Perón in Evita and Rose in Gypsy. She also won an award for playing Joanne in the musical Company. On television, she starred in Life Goes On. She has also appeared in popular shows like American Horror Story and Agatha All Along.

Early Life and Training
Patti LuPone was born on April 21, 1949, in Northport, New York. Her parents were Angela Louise and Orlando Joseph LuPone. Her family has Italian roots. A very famous opera singer from the 1800s, Adelina Patti, was her great-great aunt. Patti's older brother, Robert LuPone, was also a talented actor and dancer.
Patti LuPone was part of the first group of students to graduate from Juilliard's Drama Division. She studied there from 1968 to 1972. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1972. Patti is known for her powerful singing voice, especially her strong "Broadway belt." She once said that she sees herself as "an actor who sings."
Patti LuPone's Career Journey
Starting Out in the 1970s
In 1972, Patti LuPone joined The Acting Company. This group traveled around the country performing plays. She was with them until 1976. During this time, she acted in many different shows. Her first time on Broadway was in the play The Three Sisters in 1973.
She received her first Tony Award nomination in 1975. This was for her role in the musical The Robber Bridegroom. Patti also worked often with the famous writer David Mamet. She appeared in several of his plays, showing her skills as a serious actress.
Becoming a Broadway Star with Evita
In 1979, Patti LuPone became a huge star. She played Eva Perón in the first Broadway production of Evita. This musical was about Eva Perón's life. Many people auditioned for the part, but Patti won it.
Even though she was praised by critics, Patti has said that her time in Evita was very challenging. She felt a lot of pressure. Despite the difficulties, she won her first Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. The song "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" from the show became one of her most famous songs.
In 1985, Patti LuPone went to London. She created the role of Fantine in the original London production of Les Misérables. For her work in Les Misérables and another play called The Cradle Will Rock, she won an Olivier Award. This is a top theater award in London.
