The Lo Nuestro Awards, also known as Premios Lo Nuestro, is a big awards show for Latin music. The name "Lo Nuestro" means "Ours" in Spanish. These awards celebrate the best Latin music artists and are presented by Univision, a Spanish-language TV network in the United States. The awards started in 1989.

Many famous Latino actors, musicians, and other stars attend the show. It is broadcast across all of the Americas. In 2006, the show started offering closed captioning in English, so more people could understand it. The 2013 show was special because it was the 25th anniversary, and it was dedicated to singer Jenni Rivera, who had passed away.

The artist who has won the most Premios Lo Nuestro awards is the Puerto Rican singer Olga Tañón.

What Are the Lo Nuestro Awards?

The Lo Nuestro Awards were created in 1989 by Univision. Their goal was to honor the most talented artists in Latin music.

At first, Univision and Billboard magazine helped choose the nominees. Then, the public voted for the winners. Later, program directors from Spanish-language radio stations in the U.S. voted, and an accounting firm checked the results.

The award trophy looks like a treble clef, which is a musical symbol.

Music Categories

When the awards first started, they had categories for:

  • Pop music
  • Tropical/Salsa music
  • Regional Mexican music
  • Music Videos

After the year 2000, they added more categories, including:

  • Rock music
  • More specific types of Regional Mexican music like Ranchera, Grupero, Tejano, and Norteño
  • Different styles of Tropical/Salsa music like Traditional, Merengue, and Salsa

Before the Latin Grammy Awards began, the Lo Nuestro Awards were seen as the most important awards for Latin music, like the Grammy Awards for English music. Because the Latin Grammys started in September 2000, the Lo Nuestro ceremony was moved from May to February. This way, the two big awards shows wouldn't be too close together. Songs released between October 1st and September 30th of the previous year can be nominated for the awards.
