The Republican Governors Association (RGA) is a group based in Washington, D.C.. It was started in 1961. This organization is made up of U.S. state and territorial Republican governors. Its main goal is to help elect and support Republican governors across the United States.

The RGA has a special group called the Executive Committee. For 2024, this committee included governors like Eric Holcomb from Indiana and Greg Abbott from Texas. In November 2024, Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia became the Chairman. Governor Greg Gianforte of Montana was chosen as Vice Chairman. Governor Henry McMaster of South Carolina became the Policy Chairman.

The RGA has a similar group for the Democratic party, called the Democratic Governors Association. However, the RGA is not connected to the National Governors Association. The National Governors Association is a non-political group for all governors.

How the RGA Helps in Elections

The RGA works to support Republican candidates during election times. They help governors get elected and stay in office.

Election Results in Recent Years

  • 2018 Elections: In 2018, there were 36 elections for governor. Republicans lost 7 governorships overall.
  • 2020 Elections: In 2020, 11 states and two territories held elections. Republicans gained one state governorship in Montana. This was the first time Montana elected a Republican governor in 16 years. However, they lost one territorial governorship in Puerto Rico.
  • 2022 Elections: In 2022, 36 gubernatorial races took place. Republicans lost 2 governorships. They also lost all territorial governorships.
  • 2023 Elections: In 2023, there were 3 elections for governor. In Louisiana, Republican Jeff Landry was elected. He took office in January 2024.

Raising Money for Campaigns

The RGA raises money to help its candidates. This money is used for things like advertising and campaign events.

In 2010, the RGA raised $58 million in 18 months. Their Democratic counterpart raised $40 million during the same time. Unlike national political parties, the RGA can accept unlimited amounts of money from companies. For example, the RGA received $1 million from News Corporation, which owns Fox News. They also received $500,000 from WellPoint (now Anthem).

In 2018, the RGA announced they raised $63.2 million in 2017. This was a new record for them. It was much more than the $52.5 million they raised in 2013.
