U.S. Route 400 (US 400) is a major highway in the United States. It stretches for about 481 miles (774 kilometers) from west to east. This highway was first created in 1994.

US 400 starts in Granada, Colorado. Here, it meets U.S. Route 385. The highway then travels across Kansas and ends near Joplin, Missouri. Its eastern end is at an interchange with Interstate 44. When it was first built, US 400 ended in Garden City, Kansas. But in 1996, it was extended to its current western start point.

The number "400" for this highway is a bit unusual. Most U.S. Highways follow a special numbering system. This system is set up by the AASHTO. Usually, a three-digit highway number means it's a branch of a main, two-digit highway. For example, US 101 is a branch of US 1. But there is no "US 0" for US 400 to be a branch of.

Exploring US 400: A Journey Across States

US 400 travels through three different states. It begins in Colorado, crosses almost all of Kansas, and ends in Missouri. Let's take a closer look at its path.

Colorado: The Western Start

US 400 begins its journey in Granada, Colorado. It starts at a meeting point with U.S. Route 385. From there, US 400 joins up with U.S. Route 50. These two highways travel together through a town called Holly, Colorado. They continue eastward until they reach the border of Kansas.

Kansas: The Longest Stretch

Kansas is where US 400 spends most of its time. US 400 and US 50 enter Kansas together near Coolidge, Kansas. They stay together through Garden City, Kansas. In Garden City, they cross U.S. Route 83.

The two highways, US 400 and US 50, then separate in Dodge City, Kansas. In Dodge City, US 400 also meets U.S. Route 56 and U.S. Route 283. After leaving Dodge City, US 400 heads southeast. It first meets U.S. Route 54 in Mullinville, Kansas.

Traveling with US 54 in Kansas

US 400 and US 54 then begin to travel together. This shared path takes them through several towns. These include Greensburg, Kansas, Pratt, Kansas, and Kingman, Kansas. Eventually, they reach the big city of Wichita, Kansas.

In Wichita, US 400 and US 54 cross Interstate 235. They also join up with U.S. Route 81 and Interstate 135. A short highway called K-96 connects to Interstate 35. Interstate 35 is also known as the Kansas Turnpike.

Near Augusta, Kansas, US 400 and US 54 also travel with U.S. Route 77. US 400 then separates from these highways in Haverhill, Kansas.

Eastward Path in Kansas

After leaving US 54, US 400 continues east. It passes through several small towns. Then it turns southeast towards the Fredonia area. It crosses U.S. Route 75 in Neodesha, Kansas. After a short time with US 75, it turns east again.

US 400 then meets U.S. Route 169 near Morehead, Kansas. It also crosses U.S. Route 59 near Parsons, Kansas. Further east, it meets U.S. Route 69 south of Pittsburg, Kansas. US 400 then turns south with US 69.

In Crestline, Kansas, US 400 follows U.S. Route 69A south to Riverton, Kansas. Finally, US 400 turns east with U.S. Route 166 in Baxter Springs, Kansas. These two highways then travel together into Missouri.

Missouri: The Eastern End

US 400, still traveling with U.S. Route 166, reaches its end in Missouri. It finishes at Interstate 44. This point is about one mile (1.6 kilometers) east of the Kansas-Missouri state line. It is also about three miles (5 kilometers) west of Joplin, Missouri.
