Vermilion Parish (which means "Vermillion Parish" in French) is a special kind of county in the U.S. state of Louisiana. It was created in 1844. The main town and government center is Abbeville.
Vermilion Parish is located in southern Acadiana, a region known for its unique French-Cajun culture. It is also part of the larger Lafayette metropolitan area. In 2020, about 57,359 people lived here.
Over the last few decades, some parts of the southern parish have been washed away by water. This happened especially after big storms like Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita in 2005.

History of Vermilion Parish
For thousands of years, different groups of Indigenous peoples lived in this area. By the time European explorers arrived, the Chitimacha and Atakapa tribes were living here. They were the first American Indians that Spanish and French explorers and settlers met. Sadly, many of these tribes' people died because they caught European diseases.
By the late 1700s, people from different backgrounds had moved into the area. These included French and Spanish settlers, and Africans who were brought here as enslaved people. French-Canadians from Acadia also arrived. They had been forced to leave their homes after the Seven Years' War, which Great Britain won.
Over time, many people in the parish became Cajun, and French was the main language spoken for many years. In the mid-to-late 1800s, more people came. These included European Americans and immigrants from Italy who came to work on farms. There were also Jewish immigrants from Germany and eastern Europe who often became merchants in the towns.
