The city of Villeneuve-d'Ascq was officially created in 1970. This happened when the towns of Ascq, Annappes, and Flers joined together.
The name remembers both the "new" (neuve) and the "old." The old town of Ascq had a very sad event on April 1, 1944. During World War II, many people lost their lives there.
There were attempts to merge Villeneuve-d'Ascq with Lille in 1972 and 1976, but they didn't happen.
