Río Breogán is a professional basketball team from Lugo, Spain. They play in the top Spanish league, called Liga ACB. The club started in 1966, founded by the Varela-Portas brothers.

The team's name comes from Breogán, a legendary king from Galicia. Breogán is the most popular basketball club in Galicia. They have played more seasons and games in the top Spanish league than any other Galician team. Their fans proudly call them "O equipo de Galicia," which means "Galicia's team."

Breogán's jerseys are usually sky blue with white or dark blue details. Their home games are played at the Pazo dos Deportes arena. This arena can hold 5,310 people. It is known for having many fans attend games. The current president is José Antonio Caneda. Many famous players have played for Breogán. Some of these include Charlie Bell, Pete Mickeal, Velimir Perasović, and Džanan Musa.

Team History

CB Breogán was founded in 1966. Just five years later, in 1971, they reached Spain's top basketball league for the first time. They stayed there until 1977, except for one season. Alfredo Pérez was a top scorer for the league during this time.

Breogán had another team in Lugo called La Casera. Even though La Casera had more local players, Breogán was the city's favorite. La Casera eventually stopped playing, and some of their players joined Breogán.

The team often moved between the top league and lower divisions. They returned to the top league, now called Liga ACB, in 1983. In 1985, they even played in a European competition called the FIBA Korać Cup. A local player from Lugo, Manel Sánchez, was the star of the team.

In 1987, Breogán was relegated from the top league. This happened after a controversial game where the other team scored winning points after time had run out. The team's arena was closed because of this. Breogán had to play their remaining games far away in A Coruña. Even so, many fans traveled to support them.

Breogán returned to the Liga ACB in 1988 and stayed until 1995. Manel Sánchez left the club. Velimir Perasović, an Olympic medalist, joined the team in 1992. This was also the first season in their new arena, the Pazo dos Deportes.

In 1999, the club was promoted to the Liga ACB again. They stayed for seven years this time. Great players like Anthony Bonner and Nikola Lončar played for them. In 2004, they earned a spot in a European competition. However, another team, Real Madrid, was invited instead.

The 2004–05 season saw Charlie Bell join the team. He was one of the most talented players in the league. His amazing performance helped him move to the NBA the next season. In 2006, Breogán was relegated to a lower league, LEB Oro. This was their longest time away from the top league, lasting 12 years.

The club faced serious money problems in the early 2010s. They were almost forced to close down. Their former chairman, Raúl López, left to join a rival team, Obradoiro CAB. This started a big rivalry between the two Galician teams.

After many years, Breogán finally won the LEB Oro in 2018 and returned to the top league. They were relegated again in 2019. But in 2021, Breogán was promoted to the top league once more. They won a tough final series against Granada.

Breogán had a fantastic start to the 2021-22 season. They won the Galician Cup against their rivals, Obradoiro CAB. They also won their first two Liga ACB games. They even qualified for the Copa del Rey de Baloncesto for the first time in over 30 years. They lost a close game to Real Madrid Baloncesto in the quarterfinals.

Their star player, Džanan Musa, got injured. Another key player, Trae Bell-Haynes, also got injured. These injuries hurt their chances of making the play-offs. However, they were never in danger of being relegated. Džanan Musa became a club legend that season. He won the Liga ACB's MVP award and then moved to Real Madrid Baloncesto.

In the 2022-23 season, Breogán had another successful year. They finished 10th in the Liga ACB. This earned them a direct spot in the 2023-24 Basketball Champions League. They even beat Real Madrid Baloncesto by a score of 96–72.

For the 2023-24 season, Breogán had to rebuild their team. Many new players joined, but they faced several challenges. Key players like Toni Nakić and Anthony Polite got injured. Other players, like Zan Mark Sisko, left the team. Despite these issues, they managed to stay in the Liga ACB. In December 2023, they signed Ben McLemore, a player with nine years of NBA experience.

In the 2023-24 Basketball Champions League, Breogán won all their home games. They finished third in their group and moved on to the play-in stage. They secured their spot in the Liga ACB for the next season by winning a game in May 2024.

Sponsorship Names

Over the years, Club Baloncesto Breogán has used different names because of their sponsors. For example, they were known as Breogán Fontecelta, Leche Río Breogán, and Cafés Candelas Breogán. Since 2021, they have been known as Río Breogán.

Team Rivalries

Breogán has had several rivals throughout its history. In their early years, a big rival was CB OAR Ferrol, which no longer exists. Club Ourense Baloncesto was also a rival, especially in 2015.

However, Obradoiro CAB, a team from Santiago de Compostela, is now Breogán's biggest rival. This rivalry started in the early 2010s. Breogán fans felt betrayed when their former chairman left to join Obradoiro. Before this, Breogán had a much longer and better history. Now, both teams play in the Liga ACB. Their games against each other are known as the "Galician Derby." It is one of the biggest rivalries in Spanish basketball.
