Fred played for América Mineiro for one season as a professional. In 2004, he moved to their city rival, Cruzeiro. He scored 41 goals in 43 games for Cruzeiro in 2005.
Playing for Lyon in France
After his success at Cruzeiro, Fred joined Lyon in France in 2005. Lyon was the defending champion of Ligue 1. In his first season (2005–06), Fred scored 14 goals. He was the second-highest goalscorer in the league. Lyon won their first league title with him.
Even though he missed two months of the 2006–07 season, Fred still scored 11 goals in 20 games. He was Lyon's top scorer as they won the league again. In September 2006, he scored a great goal against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League. He beat a defender and chipped the ball over the goalkeeper.
During the 2007–08 season, Fred got injured. When he returned, he had fewer chances to play. This was because of new players like Milan Baroš and Karim Benzema. In 2008, Fred wanted to leave Lyon. He played his last game for them in January 2009. He was released from his contract in February 2009.
Returning to Fluminense
After leaving Lyon, Fred signed a five-year deal with Fluminense in Brazil. He scored two goals in his first game on March 15, 2009. Fluminense won the match 3–1. Fred helped Fluminense avoid being relegated in 2009.
In 2010, he led Fluminense to win the Série A title. He missed many games that season but was still a key player. In July 2011, he broke the record for most goals in the Brasileirão. He scored two goals against Bahia, reaching 44 goals.
On November 16, 2011, Fred scored four goals in a 5–4 win against Gremio. Four days later, he scored three goals in a 4–0 win against Figueirense. He finished that season as the second-highest scorer with 22 goals. On November 11, 2012, Fred scored two goals in a 3–2 win over Palmeiras. This win secured the 2012 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A title for Fluminense. He was the league's top scorer and best player that year.
Time at Atlético Mineiro
On June 8, 2016, Fred signed a two-year deal with Atlético Mineiro. He made his debut on June 12, 2016, against his former club Cruzeiro. He scored a goal and celebrated, but Atlético Mineiro lost 3–2. Fred was one of the top goalscorers in the 2016 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A with 14 goals. He achieved this for the third time in his career, which is a record shared with other great players.
Second Time at Cruzeiro
On December 23, 2017, Fred returned to Cruzeiro, 12 years after he first left. He played his first game back on January 17, 2018. Cruzeiro won 2–0.
