Frederico Chaves Guedes (born October 3, 1983), known as Fred, is a Brazilian former professional footballer. He played as a striker, which means he was a forward player who focused on scoring goals.

Fred started his career at América Mineiro in Brazil. He then moved to Cruzeiro in 2004. After two seasons, he joined Lyon in France. There, he won three Ligue 1 titles in a row. From 2009 to 2016, Fred played for Fluminense. He helped them win two Campeonato Brasileiro Série A titles and the Campeonato Carioca. He was also the top scorer in the 2012 Série A.

In 2016, Fred signed with Atlético Mineiro. He later returned to Cruzeiro in 2018 and Fluminense in 2020. Fred retired from professional football in 2022. He played for the Brazilian national team from 2005 to 2014. He was part of the teams that won the 2007 Copa América and the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Fred is the second-highest goalscorer in Fluminense's history, with 199 goals. He is also the second-highest goalscorer ever in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, with 158 goals. He once scored one of the fastest goals in football history. This happened while playing for América Mineiro, just 3.17 seconds after the game started!

Fred's Club Career Highlights

Starting in Brazil

Fred played for América Mineiro for one season as a professional. In 2004, he moved to their city rival, Cruzeiro. He scored 41 goals in 43 games for Cruzeiro in 2005.

Playing for Lyon in France

After his success at Cruzeiro, Fred joined Lyon in France in 2005. Lyon was the defending champion of Ligue 1. In his first season (2005–06), Fred scored 14 goals. He was the second-highest goalscorer in the league. Lyon won their first league title with him.

Even though he missed two months of the 2006–07 season, Fred still scored 11 goals in 20 games. He was Lyon's top scorer as they won the league again. In September 2006, he scored a great goal against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League. He beat a defender and chipped the ball over the goalkeeper.

During the 2007–08 season, Fred got injured. When he returned, he had fewer chances to play. This was because of new players like Milan Baroš and Karim Benzema. In 2008, Fred wanted to leave Lyon. He played his last game for them in January 2009. He was released from his contract in February 2009.

Returning to Fluminense

After leaving Lyon, Fred signed a five-year deal with Fluminense in Brazil. He scored two goals in his first game on March 15, 2009. Fluminense won the match 3–1. Fred helped Fluminense avoid being relegated in 2009.

In 2010, he led Fluminense to win the Série A title. He missed many games that season but was still a key player. In July 2011, he broke the record for most goals in the Brasileirão. He scored two goals against Bahia, reaching 44 goals.

On November 16, 2011, Fred scored four goals in a 5–4 win against Gremio. Four days later, he scored three goals in a 4–0 win against Figueirense. He finished that season as the second-highest scorer with 22 goals. On November 11, 2012, Fred scored two goals in a 3–2 win over Palmeiras. This win secured the 2012 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A title for Fluminense. He was the league's top scorer and best player that year.

Time at Atlético Mineiro

On June 8, 2016, Fred signed a two-year deal with Atlético Mineiro. He made his debut on June 12, 2016, against his former club Cruzeiro. He scored a goal and celebrated, but Atlético Mineiro lost 3–2. Fred was one of the top goalscorers in the 2016 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A with 14 goals. He achieved this for the third time in his career, which is a record shared with other great players.

Second Time at Cruzeiro

On December 23, 2017, Fred returned to Cruzeiro, 12 years after he first left. He played his first game back on January 17, 2018. Cruzeiro won 2–0.

Final Return to Fluminense

On May 31, 2020, Fred rejoined Fluminense for a two-year deal. In April 2022, he announced he would retire. He had been dealing with vision problems and other physical issues. A final highlight was winning the 2022 Campeonato Carioca in April.

Fred scored his last goal for Fluminense in a 4–0 win against Corinthians on July 2, 2022. His final match for Fluminense was a 2–1 win over Ceará on July 9, 2022. Fred retired with 199 goals for Fluminense. This makes him the second top goalscorer in the club's history.

Fred's International Career

Fred played for the Brazilian national team. He made his first appearance on April 27, 2005, in a friendly match. He scored his first two international goals on November 12, 2005, in an 8–0 win against the United Arab Emirates.

In the 2011 Copa América, Fred scored a late goal against Paraguay in a 2–2 draw. However, Brazil lost to Paraguay in a penalty shootout in the quarter-finals.

In 2013, Fred became Brazil's main striker under coach Luiz Felipe Scolari. He scored against England at Wembley Stadium. He also scored the first goal at the newly renovated Maracanã Stadium.

Confederations Cup Success

At the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, Fred was one of the top scorers with five goals. He won the Silver Shoe award. On June 22, he scored twice against Italy in a 4–2 group stage win. He also scored in a 2–1 semi-final win over Uruguay. Fred scored two more goals in the final against Spain. This helped Brazil win the competition 3–0.

2014 FIFA World Cup

Fred was part of Brazil's squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. In the opening match against Croatia, he was fouled, leading to a penalty that helped Brazil win 3–1. After some criticism, Fred scored his only goal of the tournament in a 4–1 win over Cameroon. This win helped Brazil qualify for the next round.

Fred received negative reactions from the home crowd during Brazil's 7–1 defeat to Germany. After Brazil's 3–0 loss to the Netherlands in the third-place match, Fred announced his retirement from international football. He later considered returning but confirmed his retirement the following year.
