A Look Back: History of the High Commission
When Did the High Commission Start?
The High Commission of the Maldives first opened in 1995. Before that, it was a smaller office that helped with trade. The former President of the Maldives, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, officially opened it.
Why Did the Name Change?
From October 2016 to February 2020, this office was called the Embassy of the Maldives. This change happened because the Maldives left the Commonwealth. Countries that are part of the Commonwealth have "High Commissions." Countries outside the Commonwealth have "Embassies."
Rejoining the Commonwealth
On February 1, 2020, the Maldives rejoined the Commonwealth. Because of this, their office in London changed its name back to the High Commission of the Maldives.
Who Does the High Commission Help?
This High Commission helps people not only in the UK but also in many other countries. It covers a wide area, making sure Maldivian citizens get support wherever they are.
