What Makes a Hill Special?
Hills are often classified by how much they stand out from the land around them. This is called "prominence." A hill with high prominence usually means it's the highest point nearby and often has amazing views.
Here's how hills in Somerset are grouped:
Type of Hill | How Much it Stands Out (Prominence) |
---|---|
Marilyns | 150 to 599 metres (about 500 feet or more) |
HuMPs | 100 to 149 metres |
TuMPs | 30 to 99 metres |
Unclassified | 0 to 29 metres |
The table above uses colors to show the different types of hills. For example, Marilyns are shown in beige, and HuMPs are in lilac. A "Marilyn" is a hill that stands out by at least 150 metres. A "HuMP" (which stands for Hundred Metre Prominence) stands out by at least 100 metres but less than 150 metres. A "TuMP" stands out by at least 30 metres but less than 100 metres.
