Timeline of Michigan's Tallest Skyscrapers
This list focuses specifically on skyscrapers and how they became the tallest over time. It shows the skyscraper's name, its height, when it was finished, how long it held the "tallest" title, and which building took its place.
The Frank & Seder building (built in 1881) is thought to be Detroit's oldest tall building with an iron frame. The Hammond Building (1889) was Detroit's first steel-framed skyscraper, but it's not there anymore. The oldest steel-framed skyscraper still standing in Detroit is the 12-story United Way Community Services Building (1895). It was first known as the Chamber of Commerce Building.
