History of McFarlin Auditorium
Why the Auditorium Was Built
In the early 1920s, SMU's student body grew very quickly. The existing buildings, Dallas and Clements Halls, were too small. Everyone needed a bigger space for gatherings. SMU's President Selecman and church leaders decided to build a new chapel and auditorium. This would be SMU's third main building.
Funding and Opening
A kind businessman from San Antonio, Robert M. McFarlin, gave a large gift. This donation helped pay for the new building. The McFarlin Memorial Auditorium opened in 1926. It was built to be a chapel for all students. It also served as a place for the community to gather for important events.
Keeping the Auditorium Modern
Even though the building is old, it has been updated many times. The university wants to keep it modern and comfortable. Recent projects have restored the main lobby to its original look. Restrooms have been updated, and new seats were added. The stage also received a special floor for performers.
