Mount Roosevelt is a cool mountain located in Vermont, a state in the United States. It's part of the beautiful Green Mountains and sits in a wild area called the Breadloaf Wilderness. This wilderness is inside the Green Mountain National Forest. The very top of the mountain is in a town called Ripton, in Addison County.

This mountain is named after Theodore Roosevelt, who was a famous president of the United States a long time ago. Mount Roosevelt is one of five mountains in Vermont's "Presidential Range," which are all named after presidents!

Where the Water Flows: Mount Roosevelt's Watersheds

Imagine rain falling on Mount Roosevelt. The water doesn't just disappear! It flows down the mountain into different streams and rivers. This area where all the water drains to a common point is called a watershed.

Mount Roosevelt is special because its water flows into two big watersheds. Some water goes towards Lake Champlain, and other water heads towards the Connecticut River.

Water Flowing East

If rain falls on the southeast side of Mount Roosevelt, it flows into a stream called Clark Brook. From there, it joins the White River. The White River then flows into the Connecticut River. Finally, the Connecticut River empties into Long Island Sound in Connecticut.

Water Flowing North and West

Water that falls on the north and west sides of Mount Roosevelt takes a different path. It flows into the very beginning, or headwaters, of the New Haven River. This river then joins Otter Creek. Otter Creek flows into Lake Champlain. From Lake Champlain, the water travels north into Canada's Richelieu River, then into the mighty Saint Lawrence River, and finally reaches the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.

Mount Roosevelt is a great place for hiking! The famous Long Trail actually goes right over the top of the mountain. The summit is about 3,528 feet high. There are several smaller trails that connect to this part of the Long Trail, making it easy to explore.
