People is a popular American weekly magazine. It focuses on news about celebrities and interesting stories about everyday people. Dotdash Meredith publishes the magazine. In 2009, People was the most-read magazine in America. It had 46.6 million adult readers. By 2018, its readership changed to 35.9 million.
The magazine is well-known for its special yearly issues. These issues name the "World's Most Beautiful" people and the "Best & Worst Dressed" celebrities. People's main office is in New York City. It also has offices in Los Angeles and London.
The History of People Magazine
The idea for People magazine came from Andrew Heiskell. He was the chief executive of Time Inc. at the time. Richard Stolley was the first managing editor of People. He had worked for Life magazine before.
Stolley wanted the magazine to focus on people. He said it was about "getting back to the people who are causing the news." This focus helped the magazine become successful very quickly. People first came out on February 25, 1974.
The first issue was released for the week ending March 4, 1974. It had actress Mia Farrow on the cover. She was starring in the movie The Great Gatsby. The magazine was mostly black-and-white inside. It cost 35 cents when it first came out.
Many of the first team members came from Life magazine. This included editors, writers, and photographers. They worked very hard to publish the magazine every week.
People Magazine Around the World
In 1996, Time Inc. started a Spanish-language magazine. It was called People en Español. The idea came after a 1995 issue of People sold out quickly. That issue had the singer Selena on the cover. Over time, People en Español began to have its own original stories.
In 2002, People launched People Stylewatch. This magazine focused on celebrity style, fashion, and beauty. It became very popular. In 2017, People Stylewatch became digital-only.
In Australia, People magazine is called Who. This is because another magazine already used the name People there. An international version of People has been published in Greece since 2010.

In 1998, People started a magazine for teens. It was called Teen People. However, the company stopped publishing Teen People in 2006. The last issue came out in September 2006.
One reason for closing was less advertising. Also, there was more competition from other teen magazines and the internet. The website Teenpeople.com later joined People.com.
Competition for Celebrity Photos
People magazine is known for buying celebrity photos. Sometimes, they pay a lot of money for exclusive pictures. For example, People reportedly paid $4.1 million for photos of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's newborn child, Shiloh. These photos set a record for their website. They got 26.5 million page views in one day.

Most Intriguing People of the Year
At the end of each year, People magazine picks 25 "Most Intriguing People of the Year." These are individuals or couples who have been in the news a lot. The list includes world leaders, actors, athletes, and scientists. Sometimes, it also features ordinary people with amazing stories.
100 Most Beautiful People
People's "100 Most Beautiful People" is a yearly list. It names 100 people considered the most beautiful in the world. Before 2006, it was called the "50 Most Beautiful People."
Julia Roberts has been named the most times, with five appearances. Michelle Pfeiffer, Jennifer Aniston, and Kate Hudson have appeared twice. In 2020, Goldie Hawn, Kate Hudson, and Hudson's daughter Rani made history. They were the first multi-generational cover stars for this issue.

People Magazine Yearbook
The People Magazine Yearbook is a yearly book from the publishers of People magazine. It covers major events from the past year. This includes important news, celebrity weddings, breakups, births, and deaths. It also recaps big awards shows like the Grammys and Oscars.
The first Yearbook was published in 1991. It was called "Private Lives." Over the years, the name changed to "People Yearbook." Since 2015, the Yearbook covers events from the same year printed on its cover.
Television Shows Inspired by People Magazine
People magazine has inspired some TV shows. These include People Magazine Investigates, a true crime series that started in 2016. It also inspired People Puzzler, a crossword puzzle game show that began in 2021.
