Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Narrator
Presented by Academy of Television Arts and Sciences
Country United States
Currently held by Angela Bassett, Queens (2024)

The Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Narrator is a special award given each year to one person. This award celebrates the best voice-over artist who tells a story in a documentary or TV show. Think of it like the voice that guides you through a nature film or a historical series.

Before 2014, this award was part of a bigger award called "Outstanding Voice-Over Performance." But then, the Emmy Awards decided to split it into two separate categories. One is for "Outstanding Narrator," which is for people who tell a story in a traditional way, like a storyteller. The other is for "Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance," which is for actors who use their voices to play specific characters, like in cartoons.

The rules for the Outstanding Narrator award say that the voice must be a traditional narration. This means it should sound like someone telling a story, not like an actor playing a character. If the voice is part of a character, even if they are called a narrator, it should be entered in the character voice-over category instead.

In the lists below, the winners are shown with a gold background. The other names are nominees, listed in alphabetical order. The years shown are when the Emmy Awards ceremonies happened.
