Rebeka Masarova (born on August 6, 1999) is a professional tennis player from Switzerland. She has achieved high rankings in her career: world No. 62 in singles and No. 125 in doubles, both in 2023. A big highlight in her junior career was winning the 2016 French Open junior title.

About Rebeka Masarova

Rebeka was born in Basel, Switzerland. Her mother is from Spain, and her father is from Slovakia. Growing up in the same city as tennis legend Roger Federer, she was inspired to play tennis. She started playing after watching Federer win his first Wimbledon final in 2003.

Rebeka played for Spain starting in January 2018. However, on December 24, 2024, she announced that she would once again represent Switzerland in her matches.

Rebeka's Tennis Journey

Junior Grand Slam Success

Rebeka had a great junior career in tennis. She played in the biggest junior tournaments, called Grand Slams.

  • Australian Open: She reached the final in 2017.
  • French Open: She won this tournament in 2016!
  • Wimbledon: She made it to the third round in 2016.
  • US Open: She played in the first round in 2015.

In 2016, Rebeka reached the semifinals of the Australian Open junior tournament. Later that year, she won the French Open junior title. She beat the top-ranked player, Olesya Pervushina, in the semifinals. Then, she defeated the second-ranked player, Amanda Anisimova, in the final match.

Starting Professional Tennis

Rebeka began her professional career in 2016. She made her main-draw debut at the Gstaad Ladies Championship. In her very first match, she beat Jelena Janković, who used to be the world No. 1 player.

Grand Slam Debut and First Doubles Title

In 2021, Rebeka played in her first major tournament, a Grand Slam, at the US Open. She had to win qualifying matches to get into the main tournament. In her first Grand Slam match, she won a very long and exciting game against Ana Bogdan. It was one of the longest women's matches ever at the US Open in the modern era! She then lost to a top player, Elina Svitolina, in the next round.

In 2022, Rebeka teamed up with Aliona Bolsova to play doubles. They won the doubles title at the Open Internacional de Valencia in Spain.

Reaching a WTA Tour Final

In 2023, Rebeka had a fantastic start to the year. She reached her first ever final on the main WTA Tour at the 2023 Auckland Open in New Zealand. She had to win several matches just to qualify for the tournament. In the final, she played against Coco Gauff, a very strong player. Even though she didn't win the final, this amazing result helped her break into the top 100 players in the world for the first time!

Later in 2023, she received a special invitation, called a wildcard, to play in the Madrid Open. This is a big tournament, part of the WTA 1000 series. She won two matches there, reaching the third round. She also had a big win at the 2023 US Open, where she defeated the eighth-ranked player, Maria Sakkari, in the first round.

In 2024, Rebeka continued to play in big tournaments. She qualified for the main draw at the Indian Wells Open, another WTA 1000 event.

Career Highlights

Rebeka has won several titles in smaller professional tournaments, known as the ITF Circuit. She has won 6 singles titles and 8 doubles titles on this circuit. These wins helped her gain experience and improve her ranking to play in bigger tournaments.

Rebeka has reached one singles final on the main WTA Tour:

  • 2023 Auckland Open: She was the runner-up, losing to Coco Gauff.

Rebeka has also played in finals at WTA Challenger tournaments:

  • Singles: She was a runner-up twice, at the 2022 Swedish Open and the 2024 Torneig Internacional de Tennis Femení Solgironès.
