Tajikistan first joined the Olympic Games as an independent country in 1996. Since then, Tajik athletes have taken part in every Summer Olympic Games. The nation also started competing in the Winter Olympics in 2002.

A special athlete named Andrei Drygin is one of only two people to represent Tajikistan at the Winter Olympics. He was the only athlete from his country in 2002, 2006, and 2010.

Before becoming independent, athletes from Tajikistan competed as part of the Soviet Union at the Olympics until 1988. After the Soviet Union broke up, Tajikistan was part of the Unified Team in 1992. Some athletes from the Tajik SSR who won medals for the Soviet Union include Yuri Lobanov, Zebiniso Rustamova, Nellie Kim, and Andrey Abduvaliyev.

Tajikistan won its very first Olympic medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Rasul Boqiev earned a bronze medal in Men's Judo. Later, Dilshod Nazarov made history by winning Tajikistan's first gold medal. He achieved this in the hammer throw at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

The National Olympic Committee for Tajikistan was created in 1992. It was officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1993.
