An ambassador is a very important person who represents their country in another nation. They work to keep good relationships between the two countries. The United States and Mexico have been friends and neighbors for a long time. They started having official diplomatic relations in 1823.
The first U.S. representative to Mexico was Joel R. Poinsett. He became the first U.S. envoy in 1825. An "envoy" is a type of diplomat, similar to an ambassador. Over time, the role grew more important. In 1898, the main U.S. representative in Mexico officially became known as the "Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary." This is the highest rank for a diplomat.
History of U.S. Ambassadors to Mexico
The United States and Mexico have usually had strong ties. However, there have been a few times when their diplomatic relations were paused. This means their ambassadors were not officially working together.
- 1836 to 1839: Relations stopped after Texas became independent from Mexico. Texas was once part of Mexico.
- 1845 to 1848: This break happened during the Mexican–American War. This was a conflict between the two countries.
- 1858 to 1859: Relations were paused during a civil war in Mexico called the War of the Reform.
- 1913 to 1917: This break occurred during the Mexican Revolution. This was a time of big political changes in Mexico. The U.S. embassy even closed for a while.
During the Mexican Revolution, Ambassador Henry Lane Wilson was called back home. This was because of his actions during a difficult time in Mexico. Instead of sending a new ambassador right away, President Woodrow Wilson sent a special personal envoy, John Lind, to handle U.S. affairs in Mexico.
Also, from 1864 to 1867, during the French Intervention in Mexico, the U.S. office was led by a temporary representative. This person was called a Chargé d'Affaires.

Below is a list of the people who have represented the United States in Mexico. This includes both ministers and ambassadors. The official title for this role today is "Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary."
Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821. Before that, some U.S. representatives were sent to the area even before Mexico was fully independent. For example, William Shaler was involved in a military campaign in 1812-1813. This campaign aimed to overthrow the Spanish rulers.
