Brian Stokes Mitchell is a famous American actor and singer. He was born on October 31, 1957. He has a strong singing voice, called a baritone. Since the 1990s, he has been one of the main stars on Broadway. Broadway is where many big musicals and plays are performed in New York City.
Brian Stokes Mitchell has won many awards for his acting and singing. These include a Tony Award, a Drama Desk Award, and an Outer Critics Circle Award. He was also nominated for a Grammy Award. In 2016, he received the Isabelle Stevenson Award for his special work helping others.
He won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his role in Kiss Me, Kate in 2000. He was also nominated for Tony Awards for his performances in Ragtime (1998), King Hedley II (2001), and Man of La Mancha (2003). Some of his other well-known roles were in Jelly's Last Jam (1992), Kiss of the Spider Woman (1993), and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2002). Early Life and Education
Brian Stokes Mitchell was born in Seattle, Washington. He was the youngest of four children. His father, George Mitchell, was an electronics engineer. His mother, Lillian, was a school administrator.
Brian grew up in different countries because his father worked for the U.S. Navy. When his family moved to San Diego, California, he started acting in school musicals. He began performing professionally while still in high school. He did not go to college, but he had private teachers for acting and singing. He also studied film music and conducting through UCLA. Before his role in Ragtime, he was known as Brian Mitchell.
Brian's Acting Career
Brian Stokes Mitchell has been in many TV shows and movies. One of his first roles was John Dolan in Roots: The Next Generations in 1979. He then spent seven years playing Dr. Justin 'Jackpot' Jackson on Trapper John, M.D. from 1979 to 1986.
In the 1980s, Mitchell appeared on game shows like $25,000 Pyramid and $100,000 Pyramid. He was very good at these games and even helped a contestant win a big prize.
Broadway Performances
Mitchell first performed on Broadway in the musical Mail in 1988. He won the Theatre World award for this role. He also starred in an all-black version of Oh, Kay! in 1990. Other Broadway shows include Jelly's Last Jam (1992) and Kiss of the Spider Woman (1993).
He played the singing voice of Jethro in the animated movie The Prince of Egypt (1998). He also played Trevor Newsworthy/Collins on the TV show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
In 1998, he created the role of Coalhouse Walker Jr. in the musical Ragtime. He was nominated for a Tony Award for this role. In 1999, he starred in Kiss Me, Kate and won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. He received more Tony nominations for King Hedley II (2001) and Man of La Mancha (2002).

In 2002, he played Dr. Frasier Crane's neighbor, Cam Winston, on the TV show Frasier. He also played the main role in Sweeney Todd at the Kennedy Center in 2002.
Mitchell has also performed in special concert versions of musicals. These include Do Re Mi (1999), Carnival! (2002), and Kismet (2006). In 2005, he starred in a concert version of South Pacific at Carnegie Hall. He played Emile, and the show was later shown on TV. Critics praised his performance.
Music and Other Projects
Brian Stokes Mitchell released his first solo music CD, Brian Stokes Mitchell, on June 6, 2006. He also performed in a Christmas concert with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. This concert was released as a CD and DVD called Ring Christmas Bells. His second solo CD, Simply Broadway, came out in 2012. His third album, Plays With Music, was released in 2019.
In 2010, Mitchell returned to Broadway in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. He also appeared on the TV show Ugly Betty in 2010. In 2012, he played LeRoy Berry, one of Rachel's dads, on the TV show Glee.
He has also done many voice-overs for animated shows. These include Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures, A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, Batman: The Animated Series, and Vampirina. He also voiced characters in the Flintstones animated movies.
From 2015 to 2019, he had a recurring role as Scott Knowles on the TV series Mr. Robot. In 2016, he starred in a new musical on Broadway called Shuffle Along. He played F.E. Miller alongside Audra McDonald.
Personal Life
Brian Stokes Mitchell has been married to actress Allyson Tucker since 1994. They have one son named Ellington.
