Brian Stokes Mitchell (born October 31, 1957) is a famous American actor and singer. He has a very strong singing voice, called a baritone. Since the 1990s, he has been one of the main stars on Broadway. Broadway is a famous theater district in New York City.

He has won many important awards for his acting. These include a Tony Award, a Drama Desk Award, and an Outer Critics Circle Award. He was also nominated for a Grammy Award. In 2016, he received the Isabelle Stevenson Award. This award honors people who help others in the entertainment world.

Mitchell won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his role in Kiss Me, Kate (2000). He played Fred Graham and Petruchio in this musical. He was also nominated for Tony Awards for other shows. These include Ragtime (1998) and Man of La Mancha (2003). Some of his other well-known roles were in Jelly's Last Jam (1992) and Kiss of the Spider Woman (1993). He also appeared in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2002) and South Pacific (2005).

Besides theater, he has acted on television. He was Dr. Justin Jackson in the show Trapper John, M.D. from 1979 to 1986. He also had roles in popular TV shows like Frasier, Glee, and Billions. In 2001, he was nominated for a Grammy Award. This was for his spoken word recording of The Complete Shakespeare Sonnets.

Early Life and Education

Brian Stokes Mitchell was born in Seattle, Washington. He was the youngest of four children. His father, George Mitchell, was an electronics engineer. His mother, Lillian, was a school administrator.

Mitchell grew up in different countries. His father worked for the U.S. Navy on military bases. When his family moved to San Diego, California, he started acting. He performed in musicals when he was in junior high school. He began acting professionally while still in high school. He also took private lessons for acting and singing. He later studied film music and conducting at UCLA. Before his role in Ragtime, he was known as Brian Mitchell.

Career Highlights

Mitchell has had many roles in TV and movies. He played John Dolan in Roots: The Next Generations (1979). He was also Dr. Justin 'Jackpot' Jackson for seven years on Trapper John, M.D.. This show ran from 1979 to 1986. In the 1980s, he appeared on game shows like $100,000 Pyramid. He was known for being a good player.

His first Broadway show was Mail in 1988. He won the Theatre World award for this role. He starred in an all-Black version of Oh, Kay! (1990). He also appeared in Jelly's Last Jam (1992). This musical was based on the music of jazz artist Jelly Roll Morton. In 1993, he was in Kiss of the Spider Woman.

He played Coalhouse Walker Jr. in the musical Ragtime. This show opened on Broadway in 1998. He was nominated for a Tony Award for this role. In 1999, he starred in Kiss Me, Kate. He won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for this performance. He also received Tony nominations for King Hedley II (2001) and Man of La Mancha (2002). In 2002, he was in the TV show Frasier. He played Cam Winston, a neighbor of Dr. Frasier Crane.

In 2005, Mitchell performed in a concert version of South Pacific. This was at Carnegie Hall. He played Emile, a main character. The show was filmed and shown on PBS. Critics praised his performance.

He released his first solo music CD, Brian Stokes Mitchell, in 2006. He also sang in a Christmas concert with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. This concert was later released as a CD and DVD. His second solo CD, Simply Broadway, came out in 2012. Mitchell returned to Broadway in 2010. He starred with Patti LuPone in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.

Mitchell has also done many voice-overs for animated shows. These include Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures, and Batman: The Animated Series. He also voiced Jethro in the movie The Prince of Egypt (1998). He played Nicholas Prophet in the podcast series Wolverine: The Long Night.

From 2015 to 2019, he had a recurring role on the TV series Mr. Robot. He played Scott Knowles, a company executive. In 2016, he starred in a new musical called Shuffle Along. He played F.E. Miller in this show.

Personal Life

Brian Stokes Mitchell has been married to actress Allyson Tucker since 1994. They have one son named Ellington.
