Ghana first joined the Olympic Games in 1952. Back then, it was known as the Gold Coast, a name from its colonial past. Since then, Ghana has sent athletes to most Summer Olympic Games.

They missed the 1956 Games. Ghana also boycotted the 1976 Games to protest New Zealand's sports ties with apartheid South Africa. They also joined the boycott of the 1980 Games.

Ghana made its first appearance at the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver in 2010.

Ghanaian athletes have won a total of five Olympic medals. Four of these medals (three bronze and one silver) were won in boxing. The fifth medal, a bronze, was won by the under-23 Ghana national football team in 1992.

The National Olympic Committee for Ghana was created in 1951. The International Olympic Committee officially recognized it the very next year.
