History of the Team
The Iceland women's national football team played its very first game on September 20, 1981. They faced Scotland and lost 3-2. Bryndís Einarsdóttir scored Iceland's first goal ever, and Ásta B. Gunnlaugsdóttir scored the other.
On October 30, 2008, the team made history! They qualified for the 2009 UEFA Women's Championship. This was the first time an Icelandic football team, men's or women's, reached a major tournament. They had played in the 1995 UEFA Women's Championship before, but that was a knockout competition.
At the 2013 UEFA Women's Championship, they earned their first point in a big championship. This happened after a draw against Norway in their opening game.
During the qualifying games for the Women's Euro 2009, two people, Þóra Tómasdóttir and Hrafnhildur Gunnarsdóttir, followed the team. They made a documentary called Stelpurnar okkar, which means "Our Girls." It showed the team's journey and was first shown on August 14, 2009.
