Early Life
Jean-Pierre Aumont was born in Paris, France. His birth name was Jean-Pierre Philippe Salomons. His mother, Suzanne, was an actress, and his father, Alexandre, owned a large linen store. Jean-Pierre's family had Jewish roots. His younger brother, François Villiers, later became a well-known French film director.
Acting Career
Jean-Pierre started studying acting at the Paris Conservatory when he was just 16 years old. He made his first appearance on stage at 19. A year later, in 1931, he made his film debut in a movie called Jean de la Lune (Jean of the Moon).
A very important moment in his career was in 1934. He starred in a play by Jean Cocteau called La Machine infernale (The Infernal Machine). His acting career was growing fast, but then World War II began.
World War II Service
In 1942, Jean-Pierre realized he was in danger because he was Jewish and the Nazis were taking over France. He had to leave France to be safe. He traveled to New York City and then to Hollywood, California, to continue acting in movies.
He started working for MGM, a big movie studio. After finishing a film called The Cross of Lorraine, he decided to join the Free French Forces. These were French soldiers who continued to fight against the Nazis. He was sent to North Africa and later moved with the Allied armies through Italy and France.
Jean-Pierre was wounded twice during the fighting. Once, his Jeep was blown up near a bridge. For his bravery, he received two very high honors: the Légion d'Honneur and the Croix de Guerre. These awards showed how courageous he was.
Post-War Acting
After the war ended, Jean-Pierre quickly went back to making movies. He starred with famous actresses like Ginger Rogers in Heartbeat (1946). He also played the magician in Lili (1953) with Leslie Caron. He worked with many important directors and actors, including his wife at the time, Maria Montez.
In the mid-1950s, Jean-Pierre also started acting on television. He appeared in various TV shows. In the 1960s and 1970s, he performed in many theater musicals. Some of these included Tovarich with Vivien Leigh, South Pacific, and Gigi.
One of his later roles was in the movie A Tale of Two Cities (1989). In 1991, when he was 80 years old, he received an honorary César Award. This is a very special award in French cinema, similar to an Oscar. He also received another honor called the Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres.
Personal Life
Jean-Pierre Aumont was married four times to three different women. His first wife was French actress Blanche Montel. They were married from 1938 to 1940.
While in Hollywood, he married Maria Montez, an actress from the Dominican Republic. She was known as the "Queen of Technicolor" because of her vibrant movie roles. They had a daughter named Tina (1946–2006). Sadly, Maria passed away in 1951.
In 1955, Jean-Pierre was dating Grace Kelly when she first met Prince Rainier III of Monaco. She later became the Princess of Monaco.
In 1956, Jean-Pierre married Italian actress Marisa Pavan. They even acted together in the movie John Paul Jones (1959). They divorced at one point but later remarried. They stayed together until his death. Jean-Pierre and Marisa had two sons, Jean-Claude and Patrick.
Death
Jean-Pierre Aumont passed away on January 30, 2001, in Gassin, France, at the age of 90. He died from a heart attack.
