The Governor of Uttar Pradesh is a very important person in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Think of them as the state's main representative. They are the "constitutional head" of the state. This means they follow the rules set out in India's Constitution.
The Governor is chosen by the President of India. This job existed even before India became fully independent. Back then, the area was called the United Provinces. On January 24, 1950, it was renamed Uttar Pradesh.

What Does a Governor Do?
The Governor has many important jobs and powers. They help make sure the state runs smoothly. These powers can be grouped into three main types:
Executive Powers
- The Governor helps manage the state government.
- They appoint important officials, like the Chief Minister and other ministers.
- They also have the power to remove certain officials if needed.
Legislative Powers
- These powers are about making laws.
- The Governor works with the state's law-making bodies, called the Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) and Vidhan Parishad (Legislative Council).
- They can approve new laws or send them back for changes.
Discretionary Powers
- Sometimes, the Governor has to make decisions on their own.
- These are called "discretionary powers."
- They use their best judgment to act in the state's interest.
The Governor of Uttar Pradesh also has another special role. They are the head, or "chancellor," of the universities in Uttar Pradesh. This means they help oversee how these universities are run.

The role of Governor has a long history in Uttar Pradesh. Before 1950, the area was known as the United Provinces.

- The first Governor of the United Provinces of British India was Harcourt Butler. He took office in 1921.
- After India gained independence in 1947, Sarojini Naidu became the first Indian Governor of the United Provinces. She was a famous poet and freedom fighter.
- The last Governor of the United Provinces before it became Uttar Pradesh was Hormasji Peroshaw Mody.
Governors Since 1950
- When Uttar Pradesh was officially formed on January 26, 1950, Hormasji Peroshaw Mody continued as its first Governor.
- Since then, many important people have held this position.
- The current Governor of Uttar Pradesh is Anandiben Patel. She took office on July 29, 2019.
