List of designations under the Protection of Military Remains Act facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

This article lists all the military ships that are protected under a special law called the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986. This law helps keep these shipwrecks safe. It makes sure they are treated with respect. Most of these wrecks were officially protected in 2019. This new rule replaced older ones from years like 2002, 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2017.

Why Shipwrecks Are Protected

The main reason these shipwrecks are protected is to honor them as 'war graves'. These are the final resting places for brave service members. This includes people from the UK and other countries. For example, ships like HMS Ardent (F184), HMS Antelope, and HMS Coventry were sunk in the Falklands War. They are not protected by the UK Act. Instead, they are protected by a special law in the Falkland Islands.

Other laws also protect shipwrecks. The Protection of Wrecks Act 1973 protects wrecks that are important for history or archaeology. It also protects wrecks that might be dangerous. A few wrecks are protected under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979.

Protected Places: Exploring Shipwrecks Safely

Protected places are shipwrecks that are known by name. Sometimes, their exact location isn't fully known. You are allowed to dive at these sites. However, it is against the law to go inside the wreck. You also cannot touch, move, or take anything from the site. You need a special permission from the Ministry of Defence to do so.

Controlled Sites: No-Go Zones for Divers

Controlled sites are specific locations where shipwrecks are found. These areas are very strictly protected. No one is allowed to dive, dig, or take anything from these sites. You need a special license from the Ministry of Defence to do any work there. This helps keep these important sites safe and undisturbed.
