A Look Back at History
The Old Princely State
Before 1947, the area we now know as Jammu and Kashmir was a "princely state." This meant it was ruled by its own local king, called a Maharaja. However, it was still connected to the British Indian Empire. The state had two main provinces: Jammu and Kashmir. It also included some special areas called jagirs (small ruled lands) and frontier districts.
Some of the main areas in the old state were:
- Kashmir province: This included districts like Srinagar, Anantnag, and Baramulla.
- Jammu province: This had districts like Jammu and Udhampur.
- Frontier districts: These included Ladakh district (with Leh and Kargil) and Gilgit district.
After India's Independence
In 1947, India and Pakistan became independent countries. After some events, the ruler of Jammu and Kashmir decided to join India. This led to a conflict, and parts of the original princely state came under Pakistan's control. The rest of the state became part of India.
The areas that stayed with India included:
- Jammu Division: Districts like Jammu, Kathua, and Udhampur.
- Kashmir Division: Areas like Anantnag and Baramulla.
- Ladakh Division: This included Kargil and Leh districts. (Ladakh later became its own union territory in 2019).
Over the years, the districts were reorganized. In 2006, eight new districts were created to help manage the areas better.
In August 2019, a new law was passed in India. This law changed the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two separate union territories: Jammu and Kashmir (union territory) and Ladakh. This change officially happened on October 31, 2019.
