Myanmar has a long history with the Olympic Games. They first joined the Olympics in 1948. Back then, the country was known as Burma. Since their first appearance, Myanmar has sent athletes to almost every Summer Olympic Games. They only missed the 1976 Games. Myanmar has never competed in the Winter Olympic Games. Since the 1992 Games, the country has been called Myanmar in Olympic events.

As of 2021, no athlete from Myanmar has won an Olympic medal. However, Kay Thi Win came very close! She placed fourth in Weightlifting at the 2000 Summer Olympics – Women's 48 kg at the 2000 Summer Olympics.

The group in charge of sports for Myanmar at the Olympics is the National Olympic Committee. It was started in 1946 by Zaw Weik. The International Olympic Committee officially recognized it in the same year.

Myanmar's Olympic Journey

Myanmar's journey in the Olympics began before it was an independent nation. Before 1948, athletes from the region competed as part of British India. After gaining independence, Myanmar started sending its own teams.

Summer Games Participation

Myanmar has sent athletes to many Summer Olympic Games. Each time, they send a group of athletes to compete in different sports. The number of athletes changes each time. For example, in 1972, they sent 18 athletes. In 1984, only one athlete represented Myanmar.
