Location of Grand Forks County in North Dakota

Welcome to Grand Forks County, North Dakota! This area is super special because it has many historic buildings and places listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Think of this register as a special list of important buildings, sites, or areas in the United States that are worth saving and protecting because of their history.

Grand Forks County has more than 70 places on this list, which is more than any other county in North Dakota! Many of these historic spots are in the city of Grand Forks. This city has faced many challenges over the years, especially from floods and fires. The Red River has flooded many times, including huge floods in 1882, 1893, 1897, 1950, and the big one in 1997.

Despite these disasters, many historic buildings from the 1890s are still standing. Famous architects like Joseph Bell DeRemer designed many of them. Also, a company called Dinnie Brothers, who were bricklayers, built over 60% of the commercial buildings from that time! Other important architects who worked here include Buechner & Orth, Theodore B. Wells, George Hancock, and John W. Ross.

In 1981, a study found many buildings in Downtown Grand Forks that were important to save. This led to many buildings being added to the National Register. It also led to several large historic districts being created. Even though the 1997 flood and fire destroyed some listed buildings, the Downtown Grand Forks Historic District was still added to the list in 2005. More recently, the University of North Dakota Historic District and WPA Stone Structures in Memorial Park and Calvary Cemetery were added in 2010. And in 2011, a cool old restaurant called The Kegs Drive-In made the list!

A lot of the work to get these places listed was done by Dr. Norene Roberts from North Dakota State University.
