What Happened in the Roman Empire
The Roman Empire was a very powerful state that controlled a large part of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Many important things happened there in the year 39.
Changes in Roman Leadership
- Tigellinus, who was an important helper and friend of a future Roman emperor named Nero, was sent away from Rome. This was a big deal because he was close to power.
- Domitius Afer became a consul. A consul was one of the two highest elected officials in the Roman Republic and early Empire. They were like top leaders.
- Caligula, who was the Roman emperor at the time, also served as a consul. This showed his great power and influence.
Important People and Decisions
- Agrippa I, who was the king of a region called Iudaea, was asked to come back to Rome. This was likely for important discussions or to deal with issues in his kingdom.
- Emperor Caligula created two new groups of soldiers, called Legio XV Primigenia and XXII Primigenia. These new legions were sent to the border with Germany to help protect the empire.
- Caligula had plans for a military trip into Germany. However, this trip was stopped because a group of people, led by Cassius Chaerea, planned against him.
Challenges and Protests
- Emperor Caligula ordered that a statue of himself be put inside the temple in Jerusalem. This was a very important religious place for Jewish people.
- Jewish people strongly protested this order. They worked hard to stop the statue from being built. They were successful, and the statue was not put up until after Caligula died in January of 41 AD.
- Philo, a Jewish leader, traveled to Rome with a group of other Jewish people. They went to protest the unfair treatment of Jewish communities in a city called Alexandria.
