The year 40 AD (written as XL in Roman numerals) was a leap year starting on Friday in the Julian calendar. Back then, people knew it as the Year of the Consulship of Augustus without colleague. This means that the Roman Emperor Augustus was the only consul that year, which was unusual.

What Happened in 40 AD?

Roman Empire Events

  • The Roman Emperor Caligula was the only consul (a top government official) this year.
  • Caligula tried to conquer Britain, but his attempt failed. Even so, he declared himself the winner!
  • Two new areas, Noricum and Mauretania, became part of the Roman Empire.
  • Emperor Caligula changed the way the Roman government worked, making himself even more powerful, like an absolute ruler. He gave out important titles without much thought and even declared himself a god. He ordered that the heads of Greek god statues be replaced with his own face. There's a famous story that he even made his horse, Incitatus, a senator!
  • Around this time, construction likely began on the Pont du Gard, a huge aqueduct (a bridge-like structure to carry water) in a Roman province called Gallia Narbonensis (part of modern-day France).
  • Philo, a wise thinker, taught that all people are born free.
  • An early Christian church was probably built in the ancient city of Corinth.

Europe's Changes

  • The Germanic Quadi tribe started to settle in areas that are now Moravia and Slovakia.
