Arda Turan (born 30 January 1987) is a Turkish professional football manager and former player. He mainly played as a winger. He is currently the manager of Eyüpspor.
During his playing career, Turan was known for his great ball control. He also had excellent dribbling skills and vision on the field. At just 22 years old, he became the captain of Galatasaray.
After a successful UEFA Euro 2008 tournament, Turan was recognized as one of the best young players. A Spanish magazine called Don Balón ranked him eighth in the world in 2008. In 2014, The Guardian newspaper listed him as 38th in "The 100 Best Footballers in the World." He was the only player from Turkey on that list. He was also nominated for the UEFA Team of the Year in 2014.
Turan played 100 games for the Turkey national team. He scored 17 goals for his country. This makes him one of Turkey's most capped players ever.

Arda Turan's Football Journey
Starting at Galatasaray
Arda Turan grew up playing football in the Galatasaray youth system. He joined the main Galatasaray team in the 2004–05 season. His first official game was in a Turkish Cup match in January 2005. Later, he played for Manisaspor on loan during the 2005–06 season. He scored two goals for them.
Galatasaray brought Turan back for the 2006–07 season. He quickly became a key player. During this time, he was also called up to play for the senior national team. He helped Galatasaray get into the UEFA Champions League group stage. In the 2007–08 season, he scored seven goals.
At the start of the 2009–10 season, Turan became the captain of Galatasaray. He was given the number 10 jersey, which is a special number for famous players. As captain, he led his team to six wins in a row. This put Galatasaray at the top of the league. In the 2010–11 season, he had some injuries. He played fewer games but still scored important goals. His great performances caught the eye of Atlético Madrid in Spain.
Moving to Atlético Madrid

In August 2011, Arda Turan joined Atlético Madrid for a transfer fee of €12 million. This made him the most expensive Turkish footballer at that time.
First Season: 2011–12
He wore the number 11 shirt. He played his first game in 2011–12 La Liga in August 2011. He came in as a substitute. He also played in the 2011–12 UEFA Europa League and helped set up a goal. In September, he provided two more assists.
In November, Turan scored his first goal for Atlético in a Europa League match. He scored with a powerful shot. In December, he scored his first La Liga goal. He also scored again in the Europa League. In April 2012, he scored two goals in two minutes against Espanyol. This helped Atlético win 3–1. In the 2012 UEFA Europa League Final, he assisted a goal for his teammate Radamel Falcao. Atlético won the final.
Second Season: 2012–13
Before the 2012–13 season, Turan's jersey number changed to 10. He started the season by scoring a long-range goal. This helped Atlético draw 1–1 against Levante. He then won the 2012 UEFA Super Cup with Atlético against Chelsea. He assisted another goal in their 4–1 victory. In September 2012, he scored a goal in a 4–3 home win against Rayo Vallecano.
Winning La Liga: 2013–14
Turan played a big part in Atlético's wins in their first two Champions League matches. He scored a goal in each game. On 30 April 2014, he scored the last goal in a 3–1 win against Chelsea. This sent Atlético to the Champions League final for the first time since 1974.
Final Season: 2014–15
On 13 September 2014, Turan scored the winning goal for Atlético against their rivals Real Madrid. Atlético won 2–1 away from home. Their manager, Diego Simeone, praised Turan's impact. On 1 October 2014, Turan scored the only goal in a 1–0 win against Juventus in the Champions League group stage. In April, Turan was sent off in a Champions League match against Real Madrid. Atlético lost 0–1 and were out of the tournament.
Joining Barcelona
On 6 July 2015, Barcelona announced they had signed Turan from Atlético. The transfer fee was €34 million. He signed a five-year contract. However, Turan could not play for Barcelona until January 2016. This was because Barcelona had a transfer ban. On 29 December 2015, Turan chose the number 7 shirt.
Turan made his debut on 6 January 2016 in a Derbi barceloní match against Espanyol. Barcelona won 4–1. He played his first Liga match with Barcelona on 9 January 2016. He assisted Lionel Messi's first goal in a 4–0 win against Granada. On 17 August 2016, Turan scored two goals. This helped Barcelona win the 2016 Supercopa de España 5–0 on total score.
On 7 December 2016, Turan scored his first hat-trick for Barcelona. This happened during a Champions League group stage match against Borussia Mönchengladbach. He became the sixth player in Barcelona's history to score three goals in a Champions League game.
Loan to İstanbul Başakşehir
After not playing any games for Barcelona in the 2017–18 season, Arda was loaned to Turkish club İstanbul Başakşehir. He joined them in January 2018. He made his debut on 21 January 2018. He came off the bench and scored a goal in a 3–0 win. On 4 May 2018, Turan received a ban in a league match. This was for disagreeing with a referee's decision. He was given a 16-match ban, which was later reduced to 10 games. His loan ended early in January 2020.
Back to Galatasaray
On 5 August 2020, Galatasaray announced that Turan was returning to the club. He signed a two-year deal. He became the team's captain because the main goalkeeper was injured. He played his first game back on 12 September 2020. In the next season, he played only seven matches and did not score.
Retirement from Playing
On 12 September 2022, Arda Turan announced that he was retiring from playing football. He shared this news on his social media. He also released a video about his retirement.
Arda Turan's International Career
Turan was a regular player for the Turkish national team. He played over 90 games for Turkey. He made his debut on 16 August 2006 in a friendly match. He had played for Turkey's youth teams before this. He scored his first international goal on 25 May 2008 against Uruguay.
Turan played in nine of Turkey's matches to qualify for Euro 2008. He was a star player in the tournament itself. Turan scored two goals as Turkey reached the semi-finals. His first goal was a last-minute winner against Switzerland. This helped Turkey move forward in the competition. His second goal came against the Czech Republic. Turkey came back from being 2–0 down to win that game. He also scored in the penalty shootout against Croatia in the quarter-finals. This sent Turkey to the semi-finals, where they lost to Germany.
Turan scored two goals during the qualification games for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. However, Turkey did not qualify for the tournament. In September 2008, after a qualifier between Armenia and Turkey, both teams received a FIFA Fair Play Award.
Turan scored Turkey's 600th international goal on 5 September 2009 against Estonia. He scored four goals for Turkey during the Euro 2012 qualification rounds. Turkey did not qualify for Euro 2012 after losing in the play-offs.
In August 2017, he said he would play for Turkey again. This was after a new coach, Mircea Lucescu, expressed his wish for Turan to return. He played his 100th and final international game for Turkey in October 2017. It was a 3–0 loss to Iceland national football team.
Arda Turan's Managerial Career
Leading Eyüpspor
On 14 April 2023, Arda Turan became the manager of TFF First League club Eyüpspor. He signed a contract for one and a half years. His first game as manager was on 16 April, which was a 1–0 loss. On 7 April 2024, he led his club to get promoted to the Süper Lig for the first time ever. They achieved this after beating Altay 4–1. On the last day of the 2023–24 season, his team won the division title. They had a strong 4–0 away win against Erzurumspor.
Life Outside Football
On 16 November 2008, Turan felt unwell during a match. He was taken to the hospital and doctors said he was very tired. They confirmed he was in good health. In November 2009, he had a mild case of swine flu but recovered quickly.
In January 2009, he was in a car crash in Istanbul. Turan was not seriously hurt and continued training. He dated Turkish actress Sinem Kobal from 2009 to 2013.
Turan married Aslıhan Doğan on 11 March 2018. The President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan attended their wedding. In October 2018, their first son, Hamza Arda, was born. Their second son, Asil Aslan, was born in June 2020.
Arda Turan is also known for his charity work. He especially helps sick children. In May 2014, he became a goodwill ambassador for the Khojaly massacre. His work aims to raise awareness about this event and promote peace around the world.
Media and Recognition
In January 2010, Turan was voted the third-most popular European footballer of 2009. He was also the 14th-most popular footballer in the world. This was according to the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS). He was featured on the cover of the video game FIFA 15 in Turkey, alongside Lionel Messi.
