The men's 5x5 basketball tournament at the 2024 Summer Olympics was a super exciting event! It was the 21st time men's basketball was played at the Summer Olympic Games. The games took place from July 27 to August 10, 2024.

The first games were held at Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille, France. The final games, where the medals were decided, happened at the Accor Arena in Paris. This arena was called the Bercy Arena during the Olympics.

The United States team was amazing! They won every single game. They took home their 17th gold medal overall, and their fifth in a row! They beat France 98–87 in the final game. Serbia won the bronze medal. They beat Germany 93–83. This was Serbia's second medal in men's basketball as an independent country.

How the Tournament Worked

The tournament started with twelve teams. They were divided into three groups, with four teams in each group. Every team in a group played against each other once.

After these first games, the top two teams from each group moved on. The two best third-placed teams also got to advance. These eight teams then played in the knockout stage. This meant if they lost, they were out of the tournament.

Quarterfinals Draw

For the knockout stage, teams were ranked based on their group results. A special draw decided who played whom. This made sure the strongest teams didn't play each other too early.

  • Pot D: The two best first-placed teams.
  • Pot E: The third first-placed team and the best second-placed team.
  • Pot F: The other second-placed teams.
  • Pot G: The two best third-placed teams.

Teams from Pot D played a team from Pot G. Teams from Pot E played a team from Pot F. Teams from the same group could not play each other again in the quarterfinals.

Teams That Played

Many great teams qualified for the Olympics. They earned their spots through different tournaments around the world.

Player Rosters

Each team had 12 players on its roster. These were the best basketball players from each country.

The Draw for Groups

The draw to decide the groups happened on March 19, 2024. Teams were placed into four "pots" based on their FIBA World Ranking. This ranking shows how good teams are.

One team from each pot was drawn to form the three groups. To make it fair, teams from the same continent usually weren't put in the same group. However, there had to be at least two, but no more than three, European teams in each group.

The United States, as the defending champions, were automatically placed in Group C. France, as the host country, could only be drawn into Group A or B.

Team Seeding

The seeding was announced on March 15, 2024. Some teams had not yet qualified. So, placeholders were used for the winners of the Olympic Qualifying Tournaments. These placeholders were seeded based on the highest-ranked team in each tournament.
