Denmark is a small town in Oxford County, Maine, United States. In 2020, about 1,197 people lived there. The town is known for its many beautiful ponds and lakes.

History of Denmark, Maine

Denmark was once part of a village called Pequawket. This village belonged to the Sokokis Abenaki Indians. In 1725, during a conflict known as Dummer's War, the tribe left the area and moved to Canada.

The land for Denmark was later put together from different grants. Some settlers came from Andover, Massachusetts. The town officially became Denmark on February 20, 1807. It was named Denmark to show support for the country of Denmark. Its capital, Copenhagen, had been attacked by the British navy in 1801 and 1807. The British navy had also attacked Portland in 1775.

Early farmers in Denmark found the soil to be quite rocky and sandy. They grew crops like potatoes, corn, and oats. However, the town had excellent water power from its streams. This power was used to run mills. These mills made things like grain, lumber, barrel staves, window sashes, blinds, and doors.

Denmark Village grew up at the end of Moose Pond. The brook flowing from Moose Pond was the best spot for water power. Today, Denmark is a popular place for summer camps. Camp Wyonegonic, started in 1902, is the oldest girls' camp in the country. Camp Walden, founded in 1916, is also in Denmark. The Denmark Arts Center, which opened in 1994, adds to the town's culture.
