A Look at Fairfield County
History of the County
Fairfield County was created a long time ago, on December 9, 1800. Back then, it was much bigger! It included parts of what are now Knox, Hocking, Licking, Perry, and Pickaway Counties. The name "Fairfield" was chosen because of how pretty and open the fields were in the area.
Where is Fairfield County?
Fairfield County covers about 509 square miles. Most of this area is land (504 square miles), with a small part (about 4.2 square miles) being water.
The county is located right on the edge of Ohio's Appalachian region. The northern part of the county is mostly flat. But as you travel south, you'll start to see small hills, which are the beginnings of a more mountainous area.
Even though it's not officially part of the Appalachian region, some areas in southern Fairfield County feel very much like Appalachia. This is true for both the landscape and the people living there.
Just south of Fairfield County is the beautiful Hocking Hills region, known for its amazing rock formations and waterfalls. A big part of Buckeye Lake, a popular spot for boating and fishing, is also located in the northeastern part of Fairfield County.
