Gardening is when you grow plants like flowers, shrubs, and trees. Many people enjoy gardening as a hobby or for fun. You can also grow vegetables or fruit in your garden.

Most gardening happens outdoors. This can be in the soil of your backyard. Or you might use pots and containers on a balcony or patio. Some people even create gardens on their roofs!

Indoor gardening is done inside a house or building. Sometimes, special buildings called greenhouses are used. Greenhouses have clear glass or plastic roofs and walls. This lets sunlight in, helping plants grow. Grow tents are also used indoors. They create a perfect environment for plants. Water gardening means growing plants in pools or ponds. People often plant water lilies and other water plants in these gardens.

Gardening also happens outside of homes. You can see beautiful gardens in city parks, botanical gardens, zoos, and amusement parks. These larger gardens are cared for by gardeners or groundskeepers.

Gardening vs. Farming

Gardening is similar to farming, but there are big differences. Farming is done on a much larger scale. A farm might cover huge areas with many crops. A garden in someone's backyard is usually much smaller.

Farming is typically a business. Farmers grow crops, fruit, and vegetables to sell them. Gardening, however, is usually a hobby or for fun. People garden to grow fruit or vegetables for their own family. It's not usually done to make money.

Tools for Gardeners

Gardeners use many tools to work with the soil and water plants. Some common tools include a spade for digging and a fork for turning soil. A hoe helps remove weeds. You might use a basket to carry things or a watering can and hose to water plants. A sprinkler can water a larger area. Other useful tools are a bucket, a small trowel, and a wheelbarrow to move heavy loads.

Today, technology also helps gardeners. There are self-watering containers and garden sensors. Some people use hydroponic systems, which grow plants without soil. Indoor lighting systems also help plants grow inside.

Gardens as Art

In many places around the world, designing beautiful gardens is seen as a type of fine art. For example, in Japan, Zen monks created peaceful Japanese gardens. These gardens are known for their calm and thoughtful designs.

In Europe during the 1700s, kings and queens built very grand gardens. A famous example is the gardens at the Versailles palace in Paris, France. These gardens are very formal and perfectly shaped.

Landscaping is the art of creating an artificial landscape. This often includes gardening. A professional landscape architect designs these outdoor spaces.
