Karina Smirnoff, born on January 2, 1978, is a famous professional ballroom dancer. She is well-known for being a professional dancer on the TV show Dancing with the Stars. She even won the 13th season with her partner, J. R. Martinez. She also finished in second place twice and reached the semifinals many times.
Before Dancing with the Stars, Karina was a five-time U.S. National Champion in dance. She also won titles at the World Trophy, Asian Open, UK Open, and Dutch Open competitions. She was the first woman to reach the British Professional Final with three different partners. Later, she became the only woman to reach the final with four different partners between 1999 and 2006.

Early Life and Education
Karina Smirnoff was born in Kharkiv, which was part of the Soviet Union at the time. Her family has Greek and Russian Jewish roots. She started competing in ballroom dancing when she was 11 years old. In 1993, Smirnoff moved to the United States.
School Days
Karina went to several schools, including Nerinx Hall High School and Christopher Columbus High School. She graduated from the Bronx High School of Science. Later, she studied at Fordham University in New York City. She earned two degrees, one in economics and another in information system programming.
Dancing Career Highlights
Karina Smirnoff has had many dance partners throughout her career. Early on, she danced with Roman Nabatov as an amateur. Later, she became a professional dancer. She partnered with Paul Killick and then Louis Van Amstel.
From 2001 to 2005, Karina danced with Slavik Kryklyvyy. This was her most successful partnership, and they won many top awards together. She also appeared in the 2004 movie Shall We Dance? as a dance instructor. She even released a fitness DVD called Shape Up With Karina Smirnoff.
Her last professional partner in competitions was Dmitri Timokhin. They won first place at the 2006 Grand-Prix Dynamo in Moscow. In 2006, she also directed a dance event called "Day & Night." Karina also made a guest appearance on the TV show Hannah Montana. In November 2016, she joined the cast of the reality TV show Famously Single.

Karina Smirnoff became a popular professional dancer on the ABC series Dancing with the Stars.
Early Seasons and Partnerships
In Season 3, she danced with celebrity Mario López and they finished in second place. She returned for Season 4 with country singer Billy Ray Cyrus. They were the seventh couple to be eliminated. For Season 5, she partnered with boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. and they finished in 9th place. In Season 6, she danced with singer Mario and finished 5th. In Season 7, her partner was chef Rocco DiSpirito, and they also finished 9th.
Later Seasons and Challenges
For Season 8, Karina's partner was Apple Inc. co-founder Steve Wozniak. They were eliminated in the fourth round. In Season 9, she danced with singer Aaron Carter, placing fifth. For Season 11, her partner was Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino, and they were eliminated in the fourth week. In Season 12, she partnered with movie star Ralph Macchio and they reached the semi-finals, finishing fourth.
Winning the Mirrorball Trophy
Karina appeared on Season 13 of Dancing with the Stars with actor J. R. Martinez. They won the competition, beating Rob Kardashian and Ricki Lake. This was Karina's first time winning the show.
More Seasons and Achievements
For Season 14, Karina was partnered with singer Gavin DeGraw. They were eliminated in week 5. In Season 15, she danced with former winner Apolo Anton Ohno, finishing 5th. For Season 16, she partnered with NFL star Jacoby Jones. They reached the finals and came in third place. In Season 17, she was partnered with actor Corbin Bleu and finished in second place.
Recent Appearances
In Season 18, she danced with former NHL player Sean Avery. They were eliminated early in Week 2. For Season 19, she was paired with UFC fighter Randy Couture, finishing 11th. After a break, Karina returned for Season 21 with jockey Victor Espinoza, finishing 12th. In Season 22, she partnered with former NFL quarterback Doug Flutie, finishing 9th.
On October 24, 2023, Karina returned to the DWTS ballroom. She performed a special group dance to honor the late judge, Len Goodman, who had passed away earlier that year.

Karina's Personal Life
Karina Smirnoff grew up as an only child. Her parents own a liquor store. She has a dog named Randy, who is an American Staffordshire Terrier.
Karina was engaged to fellow DWTS dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy in 2009. Later, she was engaged to baseball player Brad Penny from 2010 to 2011. In 2015, she was briefly engaged to businessman Jason Adelman.
In the summer of 2015, she appeared on Celebrity Family Feud with her fellow dancers. She even danced a salsa with the host, Steve Harvey.
In April 2020, Karina Smirnoff welcomed her first child, a son named Theo Gabriel, with her boyfriend Justinas Duknauskas.
