Longest, Deepest, and Largest Caves in the UK
The United Kingdom is home to some incredible caves! Here, we look at the ones that stretch the furthest, go the deepest, or have the biggest rooms.
The longest cave system in the UK is the Three Counties System in the Yorkshire Dales. It has a massive 86.7 km (53.9 mi) of tunnels and passages! This huge system connects several smaller cave systems, like the Ease Gill and Lost Johns' Cave systems.
- The deepest cave in Wales and the entire UK is Ogof Ffynnon Ddu. It goes down 274.5 metres (901 ft) and has about 50 km (31 mi) of passages.
- In England, the deepest cave is part of the Three Counties System. It reaches 252 metres (827 ft) deep from the entrance of Large Pot to its lowest point.
- Uamh an Claonaite in Assynt is the deepest cave in Scotland, going down 110 metres (360 ft).
- The deepest cave in Northern Ireland is Reyfad Pot in County Fermanagh, which is 193 metres (633 ft) deep.
A giant sea cave was found in 2014 on the north side of Calder's Geo in Shetland. It's over 20 metres (66 ft) high and has a floor area of about 5,600 square metres (60,000 sq ft). This makes it the largest known cave chamber in the United Kingdom!
Another huge chamber, called “The Frozen Deep,” was discovered in 2012 inside Reservoir Hole in Cheddar Gorge. It's 30 metres (98 ft) high and 60 metres (200 ft) long.
