The Story of Marrybrown
How Marrybrown Started
Marrybrown was created in 1981 by a couple named Lawrence and Nancy Liew. They wanted to open their own restaurant in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. It wasn't easy at first! Banks didn't want to lend them money for their idea.
So, the couple used their own savings. They also borrowed money from their family and close friends. This helped them gather RM120,000.00 to start their dream. They faced more challenges, like finding shop owners willing to rent to them. Suppliers also only wanted cash when they delivered goods.
The very first Marrybrown restaurant opened in 1981. It was a small shop on Jalan Wong Ah Fook in Johor Bahru. The couple chose the name "Marrybrown" because it has three syllables. They thought this simple name sounded international and was easy for everyone to say and remember. Many other famous fast-food chains, like KFC and McDonald's, also have three-syllable names.
Growing Across Countries
Marrybrown started letting other people open their own restaurants using the Marrybrown name in 1985. This is called a franchising model. After this, the company grew very quickly. Most Marrybrown restaurants today are franchises.
After becoming popular in Malaysia, Marrybrown opened its first restaurant outside the country in China in 1996. The company grew both locally and internationally because it offered halal food. Halal food is prepared in a special way that follows Islamic rules. Also, they added popular Malaysian dishes to their menu. These two things helped Marrybrown become popular with many people around the world.

What's on the Menu
Unique Flavors and Dishes
Marrybrown wanted to be different from other early fast-food restaurants in Malaysia. Many of those places mostly sold American-style food, like fried chicken and burgers. So, Marrybrown started adding Malaysian flavors to their Western meals.
In 1986, Marrybrown was the first Malaysian fast-food restaurant to offer rice with its meals. They introduced "Nasi Marrybrown." Then came Nasi Lemak in 1989, Chicken Porridge in 1990, and Curry Noodles in 2006. The Marrybrown menu also has other yummy items like Chicken rice, Bubur pedas, Nasi Kandar, fried bread, fish and chips, cheesy potato wedges, mashed potatoes, and different drinks.
Special Menus Around the World
Marrybrown also creates special meals for its restaurants in different countries. For example, in the Indian Ocean nation of Maldives, you can find Tuna Burger and Curry Tuna Biryani on the menu. In India, about 30% of the menu items are made to be vegetarian to fit local tastes.
In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the menu includes wraps, pasta, and spicy rice. If you visit a Marrybrown in Sweden, you might find churros and mozzarella sticks. And in Tanzania, they offer wraps and veggie burger meals. This way, Marrybrown makes sure there's something for everyone!
