History of the Hall of Fame

North Carolina Music Hall of Fame
The building that used to house the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in Kannapolis. It was once the town's old jail.

Two businessmen, Doug Croft and Joe Carroll, started this organization in 1994. It first opened in Thomasville, North Carolina. In 1999, seven people were honored. One more person was honored in 2002.

The museum needed more space. So, an old city jail in Kannapolis, North Carolina, was chosen as its new home. Work to fix up the building started in 2008. The museum was finished seven months later in 2009.

A music industry leader named Mike Curb helped a lot with the Hall of Fame. He had ties to Kannapolis. He was also friends with David H. Murdock. Mr. Murdock was building the North Carolina Research Campus nearby. Mike Curb made a deal to rent and fix up the old jail and police station. He also asked his friend, Eddie Ray, to be the operations director. Eddie Ray is from North Carolina and is a music executive.

Mike Curb and Eddie Ray were both honored in the Hall in 2009. Mike Curb was recognized for his help and support. Eddie Ray was honored for his long career in music, even though he was not a performer.

In 2012, the Hall of Fame held its third induction event. This event was open to everyone. It took place at the Vintage Motor Club Conference & Events Center. This center is in Concord, North Carolina. Selling tickets helped the group raise money.
