 Independent Olympic Participants (1992)

North Macedonia started competing as its own country at the Olympic Games in 1996. This was at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Back then, it was called the "former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia." Since then, North Macedonia has sent athletes to every Summer Olympic Games and Winter Olympic Games.

Before 1996, Macedonian athletes competed for Yugoslavia until 1988. In 1992, they were part of a group called Independent Olympic Participants. The name "former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" was used until the 2018 Games. This was because of a disagreement about the country's name.
